They are designing cars without steering wheels so it's definitely on someone's radar, but it remains to be seen how regulation turns out.
All that being said, I suspect self-driving cars will be more like subscription taxi services than a vehicle you just buy outright.

Yes, i've read that it's expected that car ownership will plummet and that people will simply call for one when they need one. At present, most cars are sat doing nothing for the vast majority of the time, so it makes sense.

Driverless cars wont happen until the question of liability is sorted out.
If there’s an accident who’s liable? The occupant? The car manufacturer? The software Developer, etc,etc
Even Semi-autonomous i.e. cars that follow lanes on a motorway and monitor distances between vehicles, still need a vigilant occupant.
I can imagine anytime soon the dream of drinking a coffee and reading the paper whilst your car driives you to work.

That's actually what I'm getting at. People are used to popping in to a fuel station when the car is running low on fuel, then popping out a couple of minutes later with a full tank. That's not feasible with electric cars, but assuming your house (or wherever you are sleeping, if you aren't at home) has a free charging point, there's nothing stopping you charging the car overnight. I believe with most cars, you can connect to them with an app, so you can check the car while it is charging. Another alternative is provide stuff for people to do while the car is charging. People won't mind waiting a couple of hours if they can go see a film, eat or go shopping. As long as they have time, of course.

Fully driverless cars are expected to be on the roads by the end of the year!

Flying cars aren't in use yet, I remember being told at school that these were touted as being the norm by the millennium, but it looks like these won't be available until next year at the earliest:
