Freelance Fibre Splicing Engineer

Hi

I'm considering investing in an expensive fusion splicer and setting myself up as a freelance engineer, just wondering if anyone has any experince of working in this area i.e. is there much work about, seen some guys asking for £300 a day just to splice. Any info would be most appreciated.

Re: Freelance Fibre Splicing Engineer

Well, my mate had his own business which had done quite well for about ten years, but five years or so ago, it got so quiet he emigrated to Oz to set up shop there - it may have picked up since then.

Re: Freelance Fibre Splicing Engineer

Problem I find with many data cabling companies I use not many of them specialise in fibre splicing and normally sub this work out once they have run the cable, might be worth approaching a few local places and see what they say.

Re: Freelance Fibre Splicing Engineer

Most of the fibre circuits i plan for VM are spliced up by a company subcontracted on behalf of Fujitsu. That company has been splicing fibres for cable as long as i have worked for cable and they know our network in the North West like the back of there hand. I suggest you try contacting the likes of Fujitsu and letting them know what area you can cover.

thanks for the reply's lads, surprised to hear that many data compaines don't employ a full time splicer, but I suppose its all down to cost.

Re: Freelance Fibre Splicing Engineer

go to many levels, if you know BT openreach and their network have your own van and tools i have heard you acn earn 1500 pounds a day, many alt nets having splicing done by loads of small companies always looking for people.
Lowest you will get is around 130 a day with an agency like tech resources, who sub you out to anyone who will pay them 190 a day for you, its a great time to get into this but splicing is no longer about joining 2 pieces of glass its more about know the set up, the latest machines and testers do it all for you, just make sure you are neat.

You do realise this thread is 7 years old. If he's not working by now there's something wrong.
