12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

Not strictly IT, this.

Transformer on Virgin router seems to be clapped out. (12v, 2a)

I have an OLD Netgear transformer, 12v, 1.5a.

Will it do any harm if I use the 1.5a version?

Ta

Re: 12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

The transformer may overheat so is a possible fire risk and not recommended.

Re: 12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

According to this article, the SH3 (official figures) uses 15.3W max.

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.ph...ompared.html/3

Based on that, a 1.5a power supply should power it just fine.

Re: 12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

Check and double check the polarity at the output plug, and also if it is EXACTLY the same type.

And if it causes problems you would probably be in trouble with VM by using non-stardard kit.

Just call them and request a (free) replacement.

Re: 12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

Taf: well, it's Netgear, output 12V, but how I would check the polarity is beyond me (sealed unit obviously). It came off my old Virgin router, so I think it's still valid from that point of view.

Anyway, problem is still happening (need to reboot Router each morning as iPads aren't connected to www), so (a) I think my guess that transformer was on the blink was definitely wrong, and (b) I'll have to try Virgin...

Unless you've got any better ideas about that problem? That is, why wifi disappears overnight (no physical changes) and the only way to re-establish it is to (1) reboot Router, and (2) reset iPad and reinput wireless password.

Allen.

There are symbols on most Power supplies

Re: 12v 2.0a, 12v 1.5a

Just to put this one to bed...

it was both iPads that wouldn't connect to the wifi, and it seems that the Router was Not Guilty. Virgin community suggested upping both iPads to latest ios (which I often don't bother doing), as current one (12.1.1.) has superior wifi bits.

Anyway, after upgrading both iPads to current level, haven't had any further problems with connection to wifi, so seems (fingers crossed) that it was the problem.

Thanks anyway for the help - all info I'll try and retain for the future.

Allen.

For future reference it is always best to state what the problem is first rather than what you think the solution is.
