Yeah i think it'll come but not for a few years yet as the UK infrastructure isn't there yet.

Edit scrap that SKY have responded saying it's untrue.
A denial by Sky means nothing one way or the other. I remember them saying that the basic Sky channels were 'free and 'always would be'. I also remember them then saying that FTA channels had been scrambled because pay channels were the only way to provide quality programming and then subsequently put some of their channels onto Freeview!

I would take anything that Sky say either way with a pinch of salt.

.
Well, if true, it all seems to be part of the plan to convert terrestrial, satellite and cable channels to IPTV only. Add to that no guarantee that broadcast TV licences will be extended beyond the mid 2030s and you can see how all of this is panning out.

not true … we will be selling Sky Q for the foreseeable future,” said a Sky spokesperson
Indeed, those of us who haven’t staked our reputations on a ridiculously narrow prediction of the future of TV can see exactly how this is panning out.

What plan? Who is the owner/lead agency of said plan? Have Government or the regulator had input?

You appear to have a misunderstanding of the word “plan”.

Also you forgot to quote where i clearly edited it stating SKY responded saying it was untrue.

I didn't ignore it. This information appears to have leaked out and Sky is simply denying it so people won't be encouraged to think that satellite TV is ending, which would impact on customer take-up.

At least that's what it looks like to me. I guess we shall see with the fullness of time.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Been using the Virgin Media Stream device and so far it’s a great little device ,

A few little gripes

I’d like to see a continue watching section on the Home Screen as the Watchlist feature doesn’t take you to the latest episode you’ve watched.

I’d also like to see Netflix allow you to search its content from the Universal Virgin Search , I expect this isn’t anything Virgin can do until Netflix changes its stance.

Apple TV + , Discovery Plus would also be a welcome addition.

Atrocious news for the already drowning in debt traditional “streamers” that Sky are taking their one USP and bringing their economies of scale (and profits) with them.

So this means that you can, in fact, create a watchlist derived from different streamers on one central list.

If that is correct, it's exactly the kind of innovation I've been looking for. Hopefully, that idea will be utilised on all boxes soon.

I'm not sure how you make that out. You still pay for the streamers and here you can get them all in one place. It encourages people to use them more. The streamers would not have agreed to this if they thought it was a bad idea.

What do you mean by 'economies of scale' in this context? Surely, the economies of scale lie in the global reach of the streamers?

No, economies of scale come from being able to take a fixed cost (like say, £5bn for Premiership football rights) and dilute it across a massive customer base (like 11 million customers in the UK and Ireland), paying a large amount of money (I’ve not seen Sky’s ARPU of late, but I’d guess £500+).

No “streamer” is at that scale in this, or any other, market. For the hypothetical streamer the cost of the rights isn’t fixed, it’s inherently variable as they’d need to buy up the rights in each additional territory with a customer base with ever diminishing interest.

Lionsgate Says It’s Leaning Toward Spinning Off Studio, Not Starz
Quote:
Lionsgate is now looking at spinning off its studio business — rather than kicking out the Starz premium network and streaming business.

The company, in an SEC filing Wednesday, said that “Despite the volatile market environment” Lionsgate remains “on a path to separating our Starz and studio businesses.” However, Lionsgate is increasingly focused on divesting the studio side of the house.

Even after the separation of Starz and Lionsgate’s studio business, Hirsch added, “the Lionsgate brand will continue to be valuable to the ongoing success of our international platform.”
