ATM cheque deposit gone wrong

Those people online who say "try it and see what happens". Serves me right for listening to them.

I got a cheque from my council for overpaid council tax with 2 names on it as I am a joint tenant. I had a go at paying it into a single account at the clydesdale bank using their ATM. That was two whole weeks ago and the cheque is not showing up on the statement. To make things worse, we lost the ATM receipt. But we still have the letter from the council with the cheque number and amount on it. What puzzles me is why aren't they sending the cheque back to us?

Asking the council to cancel the cheque and issue a replacement might be an option.

Re: ATM cheque deposit gone wrong

Phoning the bank would be the obvious first step. Did you do that?

Was the cheque made out to the single account holder ?

If not then you probably already failed, cheques made out to more than one person [generally] must be paid into a joint account.

At the very least they will likely question it, not just process it.

I went to the bank this morning and an uninterested person went through the account and said "the cheque isn't clearing, ask the council to issue another one".

Yes, that's the problem, two names on the cheque going into a sole account. The council said they need the cheque back to re-issue a new one in a single name. I will have to wait for the bank to send the cheque back to me or go back to the bank and ask for it.

The council checked it and the money is still "in cash". I guess that means it's not been drawn. They are willing to issue a replacement providing I hand in the old cheque. Kind of hard to do if it's in the murky depths of the clydesdale bank's back office. But I sent a hand written letter to the bank today asking for the cheque back.

Re: ATM cheque deposit gone wrong

Well, the bank got my hand written letter and phoned back. They said although I put the cheque into the ATM and got a receipt, somehow the cheque did not register in their system and they would make sure the money was put into the account. The cheque is now showing on the statement as "CREDIT", which I guess means the cheque cleared but somehow it wasn't credited to the account, and I've heard about this happening to other people. Anyway, never again. All future cheques I get will be scanned on the bank app. That way I will always have the original cheque.

Or you can just take it into the bank and pay it in?

I can't remember the last time i used a cheque.

We seem to get cheques quite often. For example, we changed our car recently and got a refund of road tax and car insurance, which came through the post as cheques.

They are closing a lot of branches where I live. The nearest clydesdale bank is 7 miles away.

You can ask for them to be paid direct to your bank account - I recently had a (small) tax refund paid directly into our account (can’t remember the last time we issued/received a cheque).

Use the Clydesdale cheque Deposit app?

It's not always easy to visit a branch to pay in a cheque. So we've made it simpler using some handy technology. You can even do it from the sofa
