That's a good read, especially from a Virgin Media point of view.

I know that some will find it hard to believe that Sky will ever come to an accommodation with BT, but you have to consider the alternative. Sky won't bankrupt itself, the guys making strategic decisions can see where all this is leading.

In the end, the best arrangement will be for Sky, BT, BBC and ITV to collaborate, which will eliminate any likely competition, resulting in a lower bid and bigger profits all round.

You need to remember that BT also shelled out that money before even having a channel set up or any idea of any carriage deals they could negotiate. Plus they probably wouldn't know their strategy.

They have now crossed their t's and dotted their I's and have a better idea of what's affordable and things are much less of a gamble now.

The channel is set up, the sub numbers are in and are stronger than expected if BT are to be believed.

This deal with the CL shows to me that BT are rolling out the tanks and are firmly parking them on Sky HQ's lawn. Sky now have to respond.

BT will be aware that it's a long game and that they will need to make this work long term. That means bidding big at the moment and taking a hit on their profits - explaining to their share holders their long term plan.
It took Sky years to get where they are today and it will take BT years as well.

I think Sky need to focus on their bb offering; they're not far behind BT in terms of numbers now and if they invested in some better technology and hotspots to compete with BT they will see a shift.

I think sky making inroads into BT's core business is what made them retaliate, they poked the sleeping giant too much and now it's coming back to bite them.

I agree mate but Sky must keep it up. Sky have BT worried because they are encroaching on their BB numbers. Then on the other hand, BT have Sky worried because BT have now retaliated and are encroaching on Sky's main focus - sport.

Firstly, because we have the competition and regulation that we do, our bills are cheaper than for the rest of Europe, and secondly, we have that little thing called the Green Levy that the Government keeps putting up year on year. It always gets worse with Government interference.

As far as TV is concerned, the one thing we have been lacking is competition, owing to Sky's dominance, and that's why we pay so much for movies and sports.

As other big guys join in, the price will ultimately come down.

Pay so much for movies ? Theres plenty of options , you have Lovefilm Instant at £4.99 , Netflix £5.99 , Now TV Movies £8.99 , Wuaki £4.99 , Lovefilm Instant and Postal DVD starting at £9.99 you then have many PPV options for those wanting to rent or purchase the occasional movie such as Blinkbox , Sainsburys Entertainment , Sky Store , Virgin Movies , Wuaki , itunes , Google play store etc , as for sport thats getting silly and there's only one way that pricing is going and it certainly isnt down.

I read that in the paper today. Sky were asking too much for the highlights, they weren't allowing then to be shown until 10pm, when the next days play was starting.

It wasn't an attractive offer was it? I wonder how much they were asking?

Knowing sky, probably too much. Terrestrial channels are probably focusing their spending on Christmas television programmes and the like, there is a argument to suggest that the ashes should be on free-to-air television anyway.
