Random DOS on home router

Hi All,

I'm usually quite good at googling things but there could be so many reasons for this, so forgive me if this topic already exists.

We have Virgin cable here in a student house, connected to their standard Netgear router.
Lately the odd time everyone is getting disconnected from the router, with no way to get back on other than for me to go down, connect my laptop to the router and reset it.

This is a bit of an annoyance when it happens, and I'm wondering why it could be. The fact I have to cut everyone off to make it work again made me think is there a possibility one of the laptops in the house is carrying a virus that is dos'ing everyone? Maybe it's not this dramatic..

Any suggestions or similar experiences welcome!

I doubt it's a virus or something like that. I had that problem with my Linksys WRT54G router. Every couple of hours it would just completely kick every wireless connection, meaning I had to go and use the reset switch on the router. I upgraded the firmware and it was sorted.

What is the model number of the modem? Is it on it's latest firmware?

Yes that actually reminds of another strange point to mention; the usual process of resetting of the router at the wall still doesn't let anyone connect. The only way I can seem to get back on is, like I said, connecting the wire and manually resetting through the config page.

To be more specific, the router model is WGR614v6, and firmware V2.5.22_2.5.22.

Probably more likely someone is torrenting and the number of connections that is opening alongside all the other traffic is overwhelming the router

Ok then, Ive done my fair share of research on this and it seems theres no easy answer.. but this seems like a forum of knowledgeable people

Is there a sure fire way of blocking all bittorrent traffic on a home wan?

You could view the traffic being used in the router logs, and find out what port the torrent programme is using, then block that port.
