I would love to know how many meetings he had either before or after he got the script so he could wrap his head around the story and what was happening in the different realities

It’s very rare when a film is being made for it to be filmed in the sequence we see it - he’ll turn up, do his bit, then do the next bit, etc., etc.
I’ve read about people in films don’t know the whole story until they actually see the finished product.

Usually, they might see the whole script for the initial read-through, but when they shoot the film, they have their scenes of the script.
