Re: Petrol Additives
I've always used Redex to keep the carburettor jets, then the injectors clean.
But E10 has raised a requirement for some petrol cars to need a "dispersal agent" to break up the water that forms in the tank due to the ethanol, especially if you are a low mileage driver, or drive with an almost empty tank. My friends in Canada recommended a few, but they are not available in the UK. This also applies to lawnmowers and chainsaws that are stored with fuel in the tank for long periods.
Terms to google: Sta-Bil, STP ethanol, phase separation.

Re: Petrol Additives
Google "lawnmower fuel stabiliser" and you'll find a few for silly money. Personally i stick to E5

Re: Petrol Additives
I would have thought that the only time additives would be needed was if you're running a classic vehicle that was designed for high octane (>100) leaded petrol especially if the engine wasn't modified for lead free fuel. Even then an octane booster like methanol would still be needed as the fuels today are really low grade.

Yes, but which addatives are you referring to or are you referring to all addatives no matter what they purport to do?

Many stores sell them under different names, the most common name is Redex

Re: Petrol Additives
I used Redex many moons ago, but in the last 10 years I use BP Ultimate fuel depending on the engine type.
Currently its diesel and I paid £2.11 a litre at the height of the great fuel rip off.

Re: Petrol Additives
I have never used one, and never really seen what use they are.
E10 is a non issue to me as my car is diesel (as all my cars have been since 2001).

Re: Petrol Additives
I don't have time to um and ah about refueling my car. It takes unleaded and that's all I need to worry about apart from price

My car loves E5/99 octane due to the car it is and its tuning, so also don't have to worry about the ethanol problem.
I think Reddex is the only ever thing I have put in a car as an additive. Have read some advertising stuff about some giving you more miles per gallon but no idea how true that is or if there are any negatives to using them.

As long as your car is E10 fuel compatible you should be ok just filling up, if not then E10 is said to damage the engine.

My car according to the handbook can run on 05 or 10 but it runs smoother on 05 but my local garages which are BP or Shell often only have 10.

Re: Petrol Additives
In the first episode of 'Porridge', Fletcher adds his own additive to the prison van. Worked for him
