Ethernet Problems
I have recently bought myself an ethernet hub (switch) and 3 ethernet cables.
I have 2 PCs and a NTL modem going into the hub.
Now how the hell do I get the internet working on the PCs?
I've got it all linked up and I can play LAN games through both PCs, but I cannot connect to the internet.
This is a simple way of showing how it's set up:

Any suggestions in how to get the internet running!?

Re: Ethernet Problems
Why did you buy a switch? You would be better of with a router

Re: Ethernet Problems
Switches are cheaper and that's all I need.
The computers connect fine, but the internet doesn't!
I could really do with some useful help please.

A switch is no good for what you want to do.

Re: Ethernet Problems
I agree, a router would have been the way forward and not cost much more. You can get routers for 20 quid now.

Re: Ethernet Problems
May I ask why?
The PCs connect just fine.
The only routers I could find were £100

Wow, thanks.
Are you sure my switch won't work?

Re: Ethernet Problems
The switch would work if your modem allocated a real public ip to each pc (the xbox service?)
otherwise router for sharing 1 public ip

Yes, I believe it's because your switch does not give you NAT (Network Address Translation). I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Ethernet Problems
See, there was a reason I asked why you bought a switch ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif) much easier in the long run to get a router.

i think - and I don't usually delve this deep, that switches work using MAC addresses, while routers use TCP/IP, which may or may not be a different way of expressing it, especially when routers usually contain switches
Either way, forget the switch, Dar, a cheap way of sharing internet connection is via Internet Connection Sharing, which needs the 'host' pc to be on for the 'client' to work, or get a router.
- there is a trend developing you may have noticed *cough* router *cough*
