Schoolchildren in China work overnight to produce Amazon Alexa devices

https://www.theguardian.com/global-d...V6-Y6sRxlDdGWU

Quote:
Hundreds of schoolchildren have been drafted in to make Amazon’s Alexa devices in China as part of a controversial and often illegal attempt to meet production targets, documents seen by the Guardian reveal.

Interviews with workers and leaked documents from Amazon’s supplier Foxconn show that many of the children have been required to work nights and overtime to produce the smart-speaker devices, in breach of Chinese labour laws.

According to the documents, the teenagers – drafted in from schools and technical colleges in and around the central southern city of Hengyang – are classified as “interns”, and their teachers are paid by the factory to accompany them. Teachers are asked to encourage uncooperative pupils to accept overtime work on top of regular shifts.
This is disgusting..

Re: Schoolchildren in China work overnight to produce Amazon Alexa devices

It is, and it’s also illegal, even in China. Those responsible should be prosecuted and punished severely. That oughtn't be difficult for a dictatorship to organise. And Amazon should be having a hard discussion with its supplier, perhaps involving the words “you’re” and “fired”.

Re: Schoolchildren in China work overnight to produce Amazon Alexa devices

In this country kids are allowed to work.

Even work experience in school time is still work. Eg I did 3 weeks as a laboratory assistant, handling petrol. One of my tasks was to take a litre of petrol and boil it.

Do you intentionally look to find the most contrarian take on any story?

School works experience is not what these children are doing. This is slave labour.

Slave labour on which capitalism relies.

Re: Schoolchildren in China work overnight to produce Amazon Alexa devices

They are paid, so not slave labour. In the UK, plenty of kids who are at school also work. Especially ones working in their parents business, possibly unpaid. We are talking about 16 to 18 years old, not toddlers. The school leaving age used to be 16 not so long ago.

It's not about being contrary, it's about actually getting past the biased headline and agenda and putting it in the full, proper, and true perspective. The hours involved may be over the top, but people aren't really complaining about that. They are complaining about everything to do with it. Time and time again, too many people are blinkered and simply buy in to the biased headline and are not prepared to question it, to see if it's true or at least what it presents itself to be.

The "boiling of petrol" was to prepare it for further testing of the octane number(eg 2 star or 4 star). It was one of a series of tasks I did. I mentioned it, because it seems dangerous and not a task you'd expect a 15/16 year old to be given.

Re: Schoolchildren in China work overnight to produce Amazon Alexa devices

As I said, people aren't complaining about nights or overtime. They are complaining about everything. They see the term "schoolchildren" and assume it involves 10 year olds. They probably didn't read as far as the overtime bit. They certainly didn't get as far as the "they are paid" bit.
