Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

I’d love to see the direction their subscriptions go with inflation busting price rises and less money being spent on content. In one of the most competitive markets there is with some of the worlds biggest media conglomerates. There’s even some that aren’t in mountains of debt.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

An interesting article here.

https://www.tvbeurope.com/media-deli...-differentiate

[EXTRACT]

So, what’s next for streaming? Already, we’re seeing agreements with as-a-service application providers and carrier service providers to apply quality-of-service (QoS) prioritisation to their specific application traffic, improving the performance of those services for a nominal monthly fee. We are likely to see similar arrangements develop over time, with partnerships being established between internet providers or backbone networks to ensure that streaming traffic gets to consumers faster. In the future, the market may well be made up of tiered services, where consumers can pay for enhanced streaming services.

Ultimately, the SVoD and BVoD operators that can offer these value-add propositions, while maintaining visibility of the networks and providers that are working together to deliver a first-rate user experience will be the ones to survive and thrive.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Mmmmm….

A network equipment manufacturer’s representative thinks that ISPs/etc. should charge content providers a monthly fee to enable their network traffic to be prioritised, which the consumer would have to pay for (on top of their Streaming Service subscriptions).

The only winners here are the equipment manufacturers, ISPs/Network Services providers, & Streaming Services - the losers, with escalating costs, are the end-user/customers…

tl:dr - a supplier to Trans-Global Corporates wants you, the customer, to pay more for what you already pay for so they (T-G Cs) don’t have to reduce their profit to provide an adequate service.

Strangely enough, the guy who wrote the article works for a company which has a solution for this…

And once everyone has QoS options, you're back to square one, unless you then start charging for a priority fee on top of your priority fee.

The headline is misleading - it is NOT full Sky tv. It is the same cut-down version that Sky Glass customers get.

I would agree - from what I have read it will use the puck to get a 'Glass like' service without the need to buy a Glass TV - this catering for the majority who already have a better quality TV than the Glass offerings but would prefer to have a no dish solution.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

Not too surprised!
Quote:
UK households cancel streaming subscriptions in record numbers

About 1.5mn accounts terminated within three months as inflation squeezes finances

Many consumers are still signing up for streaming services. Kantar’s research, which was based on interviews with 14,500 people, found that about 3 per cent of British households took out a subscription during the first quarter.

However, this was a marked slowdown from the 4.2 per cent that did so in the same period a year ago.

Cancellations, meanwhile, accelerated, from 1.2mn a year ago and from 1.04mn during the final three months of 2021.

After budgetary concerns, the most frequently cited reasons given by those who terminated their subscriptions were that they did not use them often enough and that the platforms lacked new shows they wanted to watch.

The net effect was for the number of households with at least one paid subscription to decline by 215,000 compared with the previous quarter, to 16.9mn.

Britbox, Apple TV Plus and Discovery Plus had the highest churn rate — meaning they lost the most users on a gross basis.

Yes. I think the churn rate for Apple + is understandable as that service is given away with many TVs and Apple products and many cancel after it becomes a charged service. Britbox UK is effectively becoming part of ITV's new streaming service.

Re: Streaming services news, offers and general chit chat

One thing i miss about my old job is having bank holidays off this job we work bank holidays lol,
anyway this is streaming related Microsoft are considering making a move into the streaming market however their approach will be different they want a one service for all aka Netflix, Disney+, Discovery+, Appletv etc all in one service.
Atm Disney and Apple aren't interested but Netflix, Britbox and Starz are showing interest, it will also have Microsofts tv and movie store on it too where you can rent or purchase tv shows/series/movies etc.
I'm keeping a eye on this one closely as it does seem to be gathering steam and Microsoft certainly have the funds to do this.
