Question Landline cancelled a month ago started ringing

Bit of an odd one - my landline, which I cancelled a month ago as I have gone down the VOIP route, started ringing. This is one of the copper lines that VM installed, and it still has a cordless phone plugged in (just haven't got round to removing it).

Yesterday, it rang! It was a generic call centre, one of those white label outfits going by the number. The line has no dial tone (expected) but yet it rang. It rang again today, and I managed to answer it, but it kept on ringing albeit all crackled up in my ear once picked up. Eventually I gave up and hung up.

Anyone ever experienced this?

Don't know about VM, but I have heard of BT allowing cancelled lines to receive incoming calls (at least for a period of time). I always assumed that they did this to at least keep the revenue from inward bound calls.

The opening up of the telephony market means that it won't necessarily be BT that gets the revenue though, perhaps the various companies have come to an agreement to help each other??
