If we watched most of our TV live (proportionally) we wouldn't need a recording facility. 70% is recorded.
But A LOT of TV is watched. And that's not even including streaming content.

The number of people prosecuted for archiving material for their own use is precisely nil. That's how much they care about it.
Not that archiving on a PVR can really be considered as archiving as the disc will eventually fail at some point.

Richard, you talk a load of rot.
Doing something and not getting caught or prosecuted doesn’t make it right.

They might not get as far as prosecution, but they are making it progressively harder. The number of features that have been removed from successive generations of Audiovisual equipment shows the industry wants increasing amounts of control over content.
V+ had a function for those who wished to backup via SCART, gone in Tivo. Virtually all Freeview Recorders are HDD only, no DVD Writers built-in. And Recorders themselves aren't widely available anyway these days. Much less choice, from much smaller range of manufacturers.
Archiving in every medium ever has an expiration date, whether it be disk, tape, parchment, paper or stone.

I couldn't care less about this particular law as couldn't the vast majority of people. Most people have more important things to worry about. You clearly don't.

If you're only capable of offering puerile comments (and not even an original one at that) instead of debating like an adult, it's time to end this conversation.

Thinking about it, it's a good job that this law is widely ignored. If the late Bob Monkhouse hadn't of kept the many recordings that he made, hours and hours of content would have been lost forever. Some has even been used by the BBC to broadcast archive programming that they no longer held themselves.
The same goes for employees that 'stole' material destined for the bin.
The 'Missing believed wiped' archive is all the richer for it.

Re: Virgin TV 360 users (Horizon)
Bob Monkhouse was charged for making his collection and although the judge threw it out - he did not get many items from his collection back.

Surely they won't have been destroyed?
The Bob Monkhouse case was an oddity all round.

Not his VHS collection though, it was his film collection
https://www.filmstories.co.uk/featur...me-squad-case/
Quote:
The case went on for eleven days in all, before the judge had had enough. He dismissed the jury, told Monkhouse there was no case to answer (there’d been no evidence at all that he’d been renting the films out, for instance), and all charges were dropped. The trial had been expected to go on for three months. It was over in under two weeks.
The case, sadly, had ramifications for cinema. Whilst some of his films were returned, not all of them came back. The Cameraman? Gone. Ghost Train? Gone. “My successful defence had failed to establish my right of ownership without each film title requiring its individual claim in civil court”, Monkhouse wrote, meaning some of the films could never be returned.
Many were destroyed as a consequence.

I have to laugh that there's nothing worth watching on linear television yet there's so much of it for OB to record it takes 18 months to get round to it.

Do you have a backlog of News at Ten, Old Boy? That's a lot of hours to watch, unless you have a large household?
If you can't catch up with your recordings during a pandemic, you never will!

120 hours of recordings equates to under six 22-part series. If you record everything you watch, clearly 1Tb is seriously deficient.

No, I watch the news within four or five hours of it being broadcast.
The pandemic has made no difference to my viewing habits. I only watch TV for about 2 hours each evening (more on Friday and Saturday nights when I am not going out).
