Updated: Huawei 5G Blocked in UK

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51283059

Apparently the government press release manages not to actually mention Huawei once.

Personally I think this is a pragmatic approach, clearly informed by our own security and intelligence experts, and not by Donald Trump’s childish attempt to bully the UK into supporting his trade war with China.

Re: They did it Huawei

I don't know. I think the reasoning was that we had little other option if we didn't want to delay the rollout further. If we were not concerned there wouldn't be so many caveats to this deal.

Re: They did it Huawei

I expect they’re trying to tread the very fine line between full access and no access at all, and trying to keep both the yanks and the Chinese happy.

GCHQ will never be able to speak publicly about this but if they thought the risks couldn’t be managed I’m sure we wouldn’t be doing this.

Re: They did it Huawei

They are right to be treated with suspicion but they are cheaper than Cisco, which is what the US are probably more upset about.

I think this is more about US profits than security, under cutting the competition is what upsets the USA.It always has.

Re: They did it Huawei

I've just installed some Huawei apps on my phone, very good too ! People need to be more wary of of the personal info they give to companies like Facebook, than getting paranoid about this. A lot of the tech in their house probably originates from China . The US howls of protest are only about the commercial loss to themselves.

However, when it's National Security, I would prefer "secure" over "cheaper".

Maybe we can have both ? Expensive doesn't necessarily mean best.

Not cheapest does not necessarily mean expensive, it just means not cheapest.

Whole lifecycle costs need to be taken into consideration, along with risk factors - it's a combination of things, not just the headline price.

Depends what you mean by "core".

Core Optical, Core IP.

Huawei are not massive on optical components Ciena, Infinera, ECI are more widely used in Europe for this so in that regard I am confident they wont be used.

But certainly for higher up the OSI model, after all like all good Chinese outfits they got into the space by blatantly ripping off Cisco equipment and software.

The security concern is not just about personal data or China listening in, it is also about whether a malicious code can be inserted into the network to disrupt it.

In the connected world of the future every thing will be connected via 5G or future evolutions of that.

It's absolute mayhem in my house if the Wi-Fi goes down, or is slow, now. Just imagine what it would be like in 40years, and then someone turned it off!

Re: They did it Huawei

^^
this

There was a good near-future war/thriller book written a couple of years ago about this - the Chinese had hidden malware in the computing hardware which was in the US Air Force planes, which, when activated, borked them.

https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Ghost-Fle...s%2A=0&ie=UTF8

Now imagine that happening to our national telecoms and computing networks...
