Mick Quinlan dies, aged 55.

Former Newmarket trainer Mick Quinlan died on Sunday night at the age of 55.

Quinlan, who was the brother of Newmarket trainer Noel and uncle of conditional jockey Jack, had trained from 2000-11 before handing over to his brother.

The Quinlans moved to Newmarket from their native Ireland, where Mick had been a trainer, in 1999, and soon established themselves as respected dual-purpose handlers.

Long Run back on Gold trail

Long Run is set to make his first visit to Ireland for the tote.com Punchestown Gold Cup on April 24.

The 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero is likely to be joined by his Nicky Henderson-trained stablemate Riverside Theatre in the Grade One over three miles and a furlong.

"As things stand they are both due to run. They've come out of Cheltenham very well so we are looking forward to Punchestown, where I expect to send a good team," said Henderson

Moody not in rush for Ascot.

Trainer Peter Moody would prefer to delay a return trip to Royal Ascot with Black Caviar until 2014.

The seven-year-old lined up in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at the Royal meeting last term, holding on to her 22-race unbeaten run by just a head after dominating the sprint scene in Australia.

Black Caviar was off the track until this February after her Ascot trip, but has since returned with easy Group One successes at Flemington and Moonee Valley, and Moody is now preparing his stable star for Saturday's TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick.

Kingsbarns is still reported to be on course for the Investec Derby despite being a major doubt for the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Aidan O'Brien's Racing Post Trophy winner suffered a setback which caused him to miss a racecourse gallop at the Curragh two weeks ago.

"He had a stone bruise, he is only back in light work now and he is getting better," said the trainer's jockey son, Joseph, who was speaking at Gowran Park.

Aidan O'Brien has mapped out an early-season plan for his dual Derby winner Camelot that will culminate with an appearance at Royal Ascot.

Camelot also won the 2000 Guineas in a stellar three-year-old campaign and was just denied the Triple Crown by Encke in the St Leger, before being unplaced in the Arc.

Shortly after his trip to France he developed colic but has made a full recovery and was seen moving well in a public gallop at the Curragh recently.

"I've been delighted with him since he came back, he's shown all the speed and the class that he always had. I'm really looking forward to him," O'Brien told At The Races

Ryan Mania will be released from hospital this afternoon after an MRI scan on his back and neck revealed just minor injuries.

The John Smith's Grand National winner was propelled to stardom after his victory on Sue Smith's Auroras Encore at Aintree on Saturday, but came crashing back down to earth at Hexham 24 hours later.

Mania was kicked in the back after falling from Smith's Stagecoach Jasper at the fourth flight of the St John Lee Handicap Hurdle and was airlifted to Newcastle Hospital.

Cirrus Des Aigles will do the bulk of his racing in the second half of the season after recovering from injury.

The King George VI And Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in July, the Juddmonte International at York in August and the Champion Stakes at Ascot in the autumn are the main targets for the globe-trotting French-trained seven-year-old.

Corine Barande-Barbe is building her stable star back up to strength steadily after he sustained a ligament problem when being prepared for the Hong Kong Cup in December.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner George Vancouver is the star name among 18 entries for the 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Aidan O'Brien's Henrythenavigator colt - mentioned favourably by the trainer after galloping at the Curragh last month - was third to Dawn Approach in the Dewhurst before travelling to America, where he ran out a decisive winner.

O'Brien has also entered Festive Cheer, Flying The Flag, Francis Of Assisi, Magician and the once-raced The United States.

National hero welcomed home.

Grand National-winning jockey Ryan Mania has returned home to a hero's welcome - just hours after being discharged from hospital.

The 23-year-old rider triumphed at Aintree on Saturday aboard 66-1 shot Auroras Encore, but was airlifted to hospital the following day after falling from Stagecoach Jasper at Hexham. He was in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for two nights but was released on Tuesday and travelled to his home town of Galashiels in the Scottish Borders for a homecoming parade.

Murtagh takes Queen mount.

Johnny Murtagh is set to partner Qipco 1000 Guineas contender Rosdhu Queen as she makes her seasonal bow at Newbury on Saturday week.

The William Haggas-trained filly was unbeaten in four outings last year, winning the Lowther Stakes at York and the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket on her final two runs.

Rosdhu Queen was ridden by Murtagh on the latter occasion and Haggas will give him the leg up again as the daughter of Invincible Spirit tackles the Dubai Duty Free Stakes, a race better know as the Fred Darling.

Hydrogen is pleasing his connections but is not expected to be in action until towards the end of the season.

Bought by David Redvers on behalf of Qatar Racing Limited, the Galileo colt cost 2.5 million guineas. He was sent into training with Peter Chapple-Hyam, who trained his half-brother Authorized to win the Derby in 2007.

"Hydrogen has been showing a huge amount of promise and I know that Pete absolutely loves him," Redvers told At The Races.

Sky Lantern is likely to begin her Classic campaign in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes at Newbury on April 20.

Richard Hannon's grey, winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes and last seen having an unfortunate run in the Breeders' Cup, has reportedly developed into an even more impressive individual over the winter.

Hannon's son and assistant, Richard junior, said: "I was talking to dad and I can't remember a filly of ours doing as well from two to three as she has. She's massive - a big, imposing filly - and she'll go to Newbury more than likely."

Richard Hannon will continue sifting through his strong batch of Qipco 2000 Guineas prospects with Toronado in next Thursday's Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes at Newmarket.

Such is the trainer's crop of three-year-old colts, he is already running out of specific trials as well as domestic and overseas Classics to keep them apart.

Van Der Neer has already been given practice at Lingfield last weekend, Olympic Glory and perhaps Alhebayeb are scheduled for the Aon Greenham Stakes at Newbury, and Hannon must still find an opportunity for the likes of four-time winner Havana Gold

Leading Investec Derby contender Telescope could make his seasonal reappearance at Sandown on April 26.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt was beaten a short head on his debut at Ascot in September and had little trouble in justifying odds-on favouritism on his sole subsequent outing at Newmarket later that month.

John Gosden is to step Ashdan up in trip for his first run of the new Flat season.

Last seen finishing fourth behind Dawn Approach in the Dewhurst at Newmarket, he had previously won his first two starts like a smart colt. The Khalid Abdullah-owned three-year-old holds entries in the Betfred Dante Stakes at York and the Investec Derby later this season.

"He ran well twice over seven furlongs last year and then it all happened too quick for him in the Dewhurst," Gosden told At The Races.
