you dont choose a car based on speed but when you choose an internet service, the main factor when selling it is speed.

But they are regularly sold on speed. The point of this is that the "upto" in the adverts will require better explanations, in the same way you can do up to 70mph on the M25 but you certainly would not expect to be able to do that around Heathrow at 8am.

This has been covered in many threads already, we can't do those with negative intent any favours by discussing what NTL do as a counter measure. Needless to say, it will be a known issue.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
Speed will always be quoted for marketing for any ISP product and people should expect to get the quoted speed. It's going to take some major players in the ISP business to move away from 'speed' as an issue. Even if a 50mb product was available today it would still be sold as a 50mb product. No-one needs 50mb, we all know that but how are you going to label it.
We can all use comparisons when talking about 'up to' 10mb but I seriouly believe people will expect to get it. For those that know how to check anyway ;-)

I seriously expect to be able to drive at 70mph on the M25 in the rush hour, I pay my road fund licence, I pay my taxes, why can't I do that. ISPs need to better educate their users about these contention lines in the small print, else the issue will become more contentious.

What good would that do? No one reads the small print, and those that say they do are usually liars.

I'm not going to go on and on about this but... road fund license is a tax we all have to pay, we have no choice. We *choose* to spend nearly £38 a month on an internet connection at a quoted speed and people will expect to get that.
I think it really just boils down to how NTL or any other ISP advertise the product.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
How about this for a radical idea:
Why don't NTL advertise an 8mb product but set the downstream rate at 10mb. Every one will be please that on occasion they get 10mb but most of the time 8mb, which they paid for.
Why advertise a product they may not be able to provide for the masses.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
or perhaps we're making too much of a fuss over nothing here - the speed test results aren't necessarily a true indication of the live product. it could well be that they are running tests at 8meg for some customers and 10meg for others. what we need is one of these people on 8meg to try a speedtest at 4 in the morning and let us know the results!

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
.....and perhaps waiting 'til we actually have the upgrade before we comment on the speed.
I'll be happy with an 8Mb or 10Mb, still paying the same as I do now for a 3Mb which is great anyway.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
Yeah I think you are right. People can make their own mind up when the product is launched nationally. Most people are going to be happy with a 'fast' internet connection.

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
I still think that selling a 8mb product but setting the downstream to 10mb is a good idea though Do you think I should suggest it to NTL

Re: ntl Confirms 10Mb Broadband Speed Increase
Here we are bemoaning 10mb or 8mb, when people like Chris T only got Broadband to his house last month, even then the likelyhood of his BT line ever offering much above 2mb is remote.
