You can swop that chunk of metal for many things you can eat, they'd understand that. Besides there are later examples of such extraordinary feats from people that were competing for the equivalent of medals rather than food. One chap was a spartan called chionis who would've won gold in the triple jump up till 1952, imagine what he could've done with a decent pair of trainers instead of sandals
