So your admitting this is correct. The Samsung box hasn't been out that long and will become forgotten about when everything else is running Tivo.

The Samsung box has been out 18 months - long before the TiVo agreement was signed (and possibly even thought of). The contracts to make it would have likely been signed a while before that - so probably back in 2008 somewhere.

So it couldn't have been designed for service Virgin didn't even have

As far as I'm aware it was designed as a direct stock replacement for the SA V+ because Cisco had stopped making that box. Nothing more or less than that

The SkyHD box was made longer ago than that still got epg update and is 3d ready its called forward thinking.

As far as I'm aware the EPG the SkyHD box uses is still based on the existing technology. The Sky+ and normal Sky boxes could also do the new EPG - if their processors were fast enough

The TiVo system uses a completely different EPG technology that requires specific hardware to support it.

As for 3D, as far as I'm aware, all of Virgin's HD boxes are 3D ready, even the SA V+ - because the format chosen relies on the TV to do the processing of 3D, not the STB.

Agreed but seems naughty when some people have forked 100 pounds that there box will never be any more advanced.

Your right mate there has been no official announcement , but read the forums this has been stated numerous times and Ben got very defensive. I understand change is needed but to me V+ users should be offered a discounted new recordable box.

Ben you talk sense my gripe is that if Virgin go down the Tivo route as I understand it you will have Tivo dedicated boxes , possibly VHD running Tivo software leaving V+ running old software. In my opinion if this info is correct Virgin should offer a discounted Tivo box to V+HD subscribers.

Why should they?

Technology moves on. To expect to always be able to run the latest and greatest on old hardware is pretty naive.

Of course it makes sense that a box that was introduced after the TiVo agreement is compatible. If it wasn't then that certainly would be stupid.

But I'll say again what I said earlier. We don't yet know what Virgin's plans are for the TiVo platform or the non-compatible STBs. Making assumptions at this stage are counter productive

How many firms run different epg software? Not many Sky have the same all be it ones non HD and one is HD.

Do Virgin currently have a box what runs a different epg from the rest ? Answer no because it makes no sense and is a call centre nightmare. The only difference now is V+ display a weeks tv were standard boxes don't.
