I've just done the same comparison, removing the HD and 3D channels as well as the two channels in Telewest areas only given that we are comparing VM with former ntl as well as removing all the regional channels that spiderplant added in the 870s but keeping S4C and BBC Alba because S4C was available in Wales on ntl and BBC Alba because it has been added to the entertainment section and not the regional channels section and I make it that the number of channels is exactly the same as it was when VM began and if I hadn't have included BBC Alba then the number would actually be one less.

Apoligies but I missed out Disney XD and its timeshift because I assumed they were HD channels when I saw XD in the channel name. Therefore, in fact, VM has one more channel than when ntl became VM is you do not include BBC Alba and two more if you do include BBC Alba but if you do not allow for any regional channels in the 870s (which is the case in most of the UK as IIRC correctly, only former TW areas had additional ITV regions) then it's still exactly the same number of channels.

When the sky basics dispute started virgin had really only just re-branded muppetman11,so what i suspect was happening was sky was trying to spoil the launch party by offering a paltry amount for vm branded channels branding them at the time "worthless" as they did,and after the carriage deal ran out withdrawing their own basics from virgin media customers and asking top dollar for them.

The sky basics dispute was sorted out eventually alledegly when skys advertisers asked for a reduction in fees to balance the decreased viewership of the channels and sky eventually came back to the table with a much more realistic carriage agreement which was duly signed.

I agree with all your saying I was merely meaning Sky negotiate just as hard to get a competitive price for their customers when adding new channels.

Yes i agree with you on that,the only channel i can see where they paid massively for the content was atlantic mate,probably because they wanted to offer something to their subs on a free basis for a while as a added value service to attract more subs.

Cannot really blame them for that though.

They may negotiate when it comes to selling or buying channels/carriage agreements. But when it comes to buying shows they do go over the top?

According to sources, Sky offered more than double the amount Channel 4 previously paid to Glee's US distributor, Twentieth Century Fox Distribution.

A Channel 4 source said: "We are not prepared to pay over the odds."

The Daily Star reported on Tuesday that Sky was prepared to pay about £500,000 an episode.

I agree with you and Devil here some of the prices they pay for content does seem excessive however they must do the sums first and work out it's beneficial. To get back on topic I agree with DF while there are some ok shows on ITV 2 HD , ITV 4 HD it shouldn't be the top of VM shopping list.

I agree ITV2 i suspect has the most HD as the ITV3/4 channels show a lot of older shows ie the sweeny and professionals is judge judy in HD on ITV2HD i wonder lol but seriously i would not personally want to watch the only way is essex HD or SD others might,but i would not put the ITV channels top of my HD list if i had one which i do not really,but if i did History would be up there as would crime and investigation network in HD.
