Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Glad to hear it. To be honest I haven't (touch wood) had any problems with ntl. The few times I've needed to contact them, customer service has been available & helpful. Though if the upgrade hadn't come about I, like many, would have quite happily jumped ship to one of the many good ADSL offers around. (just out of interest, has anyone used Bulldog's 4Mb service?)

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hi, does anyone know if the Broadband upgrades have been done in the CM23 (Bishops Stortford) and RM11 (Hornchurch) areas?
Thanks in advance

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hi
Just thought i would add my two penn'orth. Been following the thread for a while, and took the plunge to upgrade from 300k to 1 Meg about 4 weeks ago. I'm in Sussex (ex CWC) and have STB + NTL phone. I thought that when I asked for the U/G that they would say that my Pace STB would be OK; but no I would need an nice silver Samsung. Fine.
Installation day came on 14th April, and appeared to go well. The engineer said that B/B might take a while to register. After a couple of hours I phoned CS, and spoke to a very helpful Welsh chappie, who said that B/B hadn't been added to my service, but did it there and then. Fine.
The installation engineer also said that our TV signal level was too low, and very helpfully checked it all out. He concluded that the problem was with the cable from the street to the house. He would organise for a new one to be fitted on 20th. Fine.
20th came and went - no new cable. Not so fine.
Eventually found out it was to be fitted on 27th (yesterday). OK. House was empty between 9 AM and 10.30 AM. Came home and no obvious sign of anyone from NTL having called. About 2 PM it became apparent that the phone didn't work, either incoming or outcoming. After a bit of detective work skulking in the bushes, it transpired that a new cable had been fitted. Any connection (sic) with the non-functioning phone I wondered? Also discovered that the street end of the cable had been left looped on the pavement in just the right place for someone to trip over!!
Phoned CS. They arranged for a phone engineer to come out this morning (28th) He confirmed what I thought; the phone wires hadn't been connected!! He also agreed that the looped cable was not acceptable. Also had my monthly bill today - guess what. They have charged me for B/B twice!! Not happy.
To cap (sic) it all, I had a phone call from someone at NTL doing a customer satisfaction survey!! Needless to say I communicated my thoughts!

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
I have been upgraded to 2 meg but from the look of this there are some big problems somewhere, any ideas ?
Thu, 28 Apr 2005 17:25:01 UTC
1st 128K took 2134 ms = 61421 Bytes/sec = approx 511 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1552 ms = 84454 Bytes/sec = approx 703 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1973 ms = 66433 Bytes/sec = approx 553 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1442 ms = 90896 Bytes/sec = approx 756 kbits/sec

I'm in Old Harlow- same service area as CM23 I think, and have just upgraded to 2Mb via the NTL website link.
The U/G page said upgrade to 2Mb for no change to monthly sub, so I'm eagerly awaiting 1st bill- as an early BB customer, I only pay £19.99 per month, including CM rental.

Appears as tho youre still on 750k. Give CS a ring and ask em to check it! You SHOULD be getting APPROXIMATELY 2000 kbits/sec.

I wouldn't be 'eagerly awaiting' it....
I think you may find you will be paying £24.99 now...
Check some of the posts in the speed upgrade threads

There's small print on there somewhere that says that you don't get to keep your existing discounts (it's either have the discount or have the free upgrade) so you will probably find that you are now being charged £24.99 like everybody else.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
I read that I am to expect to be auto-upgraded from 1.5mb/s to 3mb/s. As I see on the Ntlhome page, 3mb is being offered to new customers in this area so I assume I ought to have it now, but I don't.
I have read here that some people have gone to upgrade their service themselves, manually.
Is that to be recommended, despite the upgrade supposedly automatic? Or is 3mb still not available, even to new customers?!
Thanks
Nigel

give c.s. a ring and ask them , it may also be worth rebooting your modem as it may need it for the speed upgrade

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hi,
Just to let pepople know, if they have 750KB Cable modem access for £24.99 from NTL., like I had...... you need to call the customer services and get your acccount upgraded immediatly to the 2 MB service. For the last 3 weeks they have been offering the 2 MB cable connection for the same £24.99 a month. (1 Gig d/load limit per day). For some reason it appears to be a well kept secret from existing customers... that you have to ask for the upgrade...
Customer services says that they will eventually automatically upgrade everybodies accounts but it may take until the end of the year to do it. This is because they have so many customers and they are getting so many new ones each day.
Unless an existing 750Kb customers asks for the upgrade to be done immediatly they could wait for another 6 months and still be charged £25 for only a slower 750kbs connection......... seems like a little bit of a rip off really....... so phone now and ASK FOR YOUR UPGRADE NOW it won't cost you penny extra for them to do the upgrade to a blisterling fast speed. They did mine in under 10 minutes of making the call.
Good Website for cable users...... http://www.asdlguide.org.uk/
Test speed http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
Stevenage/Hitchin area on Luton server getting
Direction Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 1917 Kbps (239.6 KB/sec) 2070 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream 189 Kbps (23.6 KB/sec) 204 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Bit longer than 3 weeks closer to 6 now I think.

What ********, is there one person individually doing the upgrades one account at a time?
Nah it's not a very good site for cable users at all, as its' name ADSLGuide suggests it's mostly centred around DSL ISPs.
Yep IMHO a far superior test to Robin Walker's, by his own admission it's just a quick test he put together though some evangelise over it.
Also worth checking for transatlantic speeds are the tests at http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest just be careful which test server you use as some will give very poor results. Personally I find the Burlington Canada based one at http://speedtest.cogeco.net is pretty good.
2005-05-03 11:29:32 EST: 1849 / 250
Your download speed : 1893810 bps, or 1849 kbps.
A 231.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 256508 bps, or 250 kbps.
Which is about right.

No, they haven't kept it secret. They've been advertising it for crying out loud. Where have you been? :o

Who told you that? Absolute BS.

Again, BS. You may get upgraded if you call CS, you may not. Yes, it is a free upgrade - but peple have known this for months and ntl haven't kept it a secret....
Either I've missed some amazing technological development, or an adsl site is still pretty useless to cable users....
