Nope. He was already dead, which made filming him a little difficult, although he did appear in the pre-titles footage. It was Richard Hurndall, who has since died.

Ah! I remember the first episode of Dr Who, with William Hartnel. He was so out of character because he usually played a Soldier or Sergent. The series was a hit with me & I never missed an episode. As a young lad I was in at 6.30 pm, which was I think, the time it was shown.
We had a state of the art 10 inch black & white round tube TV. I remember the first time I saw a Dalek. I near sh*t myself. Strong stuff for the times. I`m still a fan. I`d like to see a serious actor have a go for a change.

I've never like that scene.
Doesn't fit at all with other Regenerations, & the whole "comedy" aspect of it seemed rather lame.

Re: Who should be the next Doctor Who?
I can't really see it being a female doctor as there would need to be a fundamental change in both inner and outer physiology (although I wouldn't say no to Louise Jameson) but I can't see any problem with the doctor changing colour as that is really no different than changing hair/eye colour.
I would still plump for Don Warrington or maybe Geoffrey Bayldon as I think it is about time foran older doctor

Re: Who should be the next Doctor Who?
David Warner is a good actor and I think would be a good doctor..
Indeed, he has apparently played The Doctor in two Big Finish Audio Adventures..

At the time the new Romana, Lalla Ward went on to marry Tom Baker. Not that it lasted very long, Lalla is now married to Russ and Chris's favorite atheist Richard Dawkins...small world.
