1 in 5 ? Not a proxy problem then, otherwise everyone would be suffering and moaning.

Are you talking about InvisionFree hosted forums or private IPB forums?

Re: Proxy Server Problems
It doesnt have to happen on every attempt to mean its a problem, a problem can cause partial failures, 1 in 5 I said as an average, sometimes it may happen 2 times in a row meaning 3 clicks needed.
How do I know its a ntl proxy problem?
Switching to my squid server the problem goes away every time, proof enough for me.
I think there is no point arguing if there are problems, that is already established, I am merely pointing out what I think seems to be most affected.

Re: Proxy Server Problems
Well the purpose of this thread was for the escalation of specific issues- see the first post of this thread.
Crysalis, i cannot escalate an issue on the ground that you have problems with certain unnamed forums.

Is your Squid server connected via ntl? If so, then it will be using ntl's proxies too! If not, then I'm guessing you are using a completely different network and so you can't deduce anything so specific.
Also a 20% failure should be easy enough to reproduce - what is the exact URL?

Re: Proxy Server Problems
Hi monkeybreath thanks for considering escalating it, to name a few forums.
cableforum.co.uk
webhostingtalk.com
neowin.net
bsdforums.org
hosthideout.com
there are many more but that is a snapshot.
mr-b I run squid on my own server located in a datacentre, using a non standard port so the traffic isnt intercepted.

Re: Proxy Server Problems
I've never noticed any specific problems with cableforum or WHT on cable, nor with any other forums, and the only problems with my own IPB1.3.1 forums are at the server end. What proxy group do you default to?

Re: Proxy Server Problems
All the following proxies I have exhibited the issue.
Default proxies for my area (LE3 Leicester)
colc-cache2
colc-cache6
glfd-cache3
nott-cache1
I usually give up after going through this list.
If you wonder why I dont just permanently use squid, it is hosted in germany and some sites which are hosted in america can be slower with the extra routing involved so sometimes I switch back to using ntl proxies.

Re: Proxy Server Problems
I don't think this really got sorted on the manc proxys. It's available using the bagu ones.
Browsers: IE 6 and Firefox 1.0.4
Default Proxy: manc-cache-7.server.ntli.net
Sites: www.wallwatcher.com
Cheers.

Re: Proxy Server Problems
I had always to use a proxy to access yahoo mail. NTL tech support says it's a Yahoo problem.
So why went I change the proxy it's fixed for a while?

I believe Yahoo block various proxies because they think they are DDOS attacks from a single user but am not 100% sure.

Re: Proxy Server Problems
I am an NTL cable modem user of only 6 months and I am experiencing a recurrent problem accessing several poker sites. NTL are getting me to change proxies like they are going out of fashion but nothing seems to work. After hour+ long calls to Tech Supp each time and a lot of wasted breath the problem is never cured BUT within 3-5 days the problem goes away - without me making further changes. I have a list of IP addresses used as proxies that have all worked at some stage for my Poker use but now they do not but I am able to browse, FTP and send/recieve emails... but I cannot play poker... today.
The poker site has been working with me over the last 6 months and they believe that NTL's proxies are blocking some ports that their servers use (http, https and tcp on ports 5700-5709, 5720-5724 and 5750-5759) but NTL are adamant that they don't block anything. I half expect this currrent problem to dissapear in a few days but I am frustrated at not being able to identify the cause or to be able to take action. And before anyone asks I have double checked and reset many settings in an attempt to sort the problem out including - (a) clearing the IE6 cache, (b) uninstalling the poker app and reinstalling, (c) playing from their Java app via browser, (d) using a different browser (IE6, Opera, Firefox), (e) changing firewall settings, (f) running with or without a proxy and probably more.
So the question is - is it even a proxy problem? Has anyone else experienced problems with pokerroom.com while using NTL? Any ideas anyone!

Re: Proxy Server Problems
ntl's proxy's only cache webpages (ie port 80) so they should not be the cause of your problems.
