Re: [Merged] - Football talk
Just found this on yahoo and thought it quite amusing......
Quote:
APPROACH WITH CAUTION
Southampton boss Paul Sturrock is certainly holding his own in living up to his predecessor's eccentricities, but there'll only ever be one Gordon Strachan. So, for no reason other than we think they're great, here's some of the wee man's greatest hits:
Reporter: Gordon, Do you think James Beattie deserves to be in the England squad?
Strachan: I don't care, I'm Scottish.
Reporter: Gordon, can we have a quick word please?
Strachan: Velocity [walks off]
Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because I'm useless."
Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.
Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado.
Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question. I'm not even going to bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.
Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home, become an alcoholic and maybe jump off a bridge.
Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here. I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man, down.
Reporter: Where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret.
Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.
Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

I don't usually read this thread, but I am *SO* glad I took a peek at it today, because those were *wonderful*!
Someone who isn't afraid to tell a reporter that they're asking stupid questions!

Well I did cast doubts on your judgement regarding Germany. Tell me you still think they are a better team than England now.

I think so. To be honest most major european country teams are better than England. OK so there was the incredible 5-1 victory in Germany a few years ago but that was certainly a one-off. Holland, Spain, France, Italy, Germany etc, all may have had the occasional dip in form recently but have regularly enjoyed spanking England over the years.

Ah, so rather than defend your own national team, you take the easy option of criticising mine? Yes, that just about about sums up 90% of England fans....
Anyone fancy actually discussing this rather than shirking the issue?

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
Trust me, I'm as big an England fan as anyone, but Russ has got a point. While I don't think that we've got a rubbish team, you have to take into account the fact that we just don't seem to perform - look at the recent (appalling) match against Sweden .
One of the problems that England has is that, unfortunately, since Shearer retired, we haven't had anybody who scores enough - Owen is a great player but, unless you team him with another goal scorer, it just doesn't happen (and apologies to Heskey fans but, until Sven decides where to play him, either up front or on the wing, he won't get any better).
As it stands, I would say that England have maybe 3 world class players in Beckham, Gerrard and Owen and, particularly until we sort out the left wing (Gareth Barry anyone?), teams like France and Italy will continue to beat us (although, to be honest, I wouldn't fear the Germans right now).
By contrast, the Welsh national team has some fantastically gifted players (Giggs, Savage (although I hate him), Bellamy, Speed etc) and actually seem to play more like a team - let's face it, it's almost universally accepted that Wales are one of the best teams who haven 't qualified for the tournaments for decades.

The problem is with the Welsh FA who couldn't organise the proverbial drink-up, whereas England have got the backing of the FA, and have some truly exceptional players, so where's it going wrong?

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
Well Wales may still get there, very slim chance but it would be fantastic if they did. article
Just noticed the Russian players name. A good job he wasn't Welsh, he could have been called, Ivor Titov.

I'd be very surprised if the Welsh FA succeed with the appeal - if I remember correctly, Titov was suspended anyway when he tested positive (or at least he wasn't playing at the time), so I can't really see how these grounds would work.
I think it's a shame though, as I said in my earlier post, Wales are probably the most gifted team not to have qualified.
BTW - Ivor Titov???

Re: [Merged] - Football talk
I really hope the appeal fails. I want my national team to get to Portugal on merit, not a technicality.
