ukonline is the company sky have taken over - they will be packaged with SKY by the end of this year in theory. also it's been suggested premium sky subscribers will get broadband via ukonline free.

Unlimited eh, Can I take this as proof from an NTL employee (nay even a director) that my 10 meg connection is unlimited now then ?

If you use P2P or Newsgroups, don't bother going to UK Online, they block them full stop.
I find that very hard to believe as i have used there connection and you can certainly download from Newshosting.com at full speed ?. It does say on there website that they do not PROVIDE newsgroup access but they do not block it. Also if they did block them full stop i am sure there would be uproar on the Adsl forums about it. Do you have a link that will prove it.

If you look at my speed you would not say that.

Is there any reason this thread isn't showing on the main NTHW page? Or am I missing something?

It's an NTL-style CAP. In other words, only a problem if you regularly exceed it. There is no mention of extra charges. They reserve the right to close accounts of people who regularly exceed it.

All sounds very reasonable to me. There really isn't a catch.

This, for the first time, is broadband that would be affordable for the likes of my mum, who only occasionally uses the net. At this price, you may as well have it.
That's not the way I read it. The T&Cs mention the fair usage policy and then say that they have also imposed the 40GB cap. So they can limit your usage even if you're within the cap.

My guess is that they'll hire the minimum bandwidth they possibly can - and share it out amongs millions of people who haven't read the T&Cs.

It'd be good for the market if they can get this working with reasonable speeds for most people - but I'm not convinced

i can see the old bt cable outside the house but it has been cut in the middle

Where has it been cut?

Usually a wire goes:
1) from the street to a junction box on the house.
2) then from the junction box into the house to a master socket.
3) then (an) optional wire(s) from the master socket to any extensions.

If the wire has been cut in (1) or (2) this will require a new BT installation at £99.

Ethernet is switched unless you're using antique hubs, which nobody does any more - for very good reason.

Obviously there is always contention somewhere along the line (or we'd have an internet each!), but the point is that in BT's system it's much simpler to add capacity at the core of the network if it's needed. Each subscriber has their own bit of wire. OK, it's only twisted pair, but it doesn't carry anyone else's data. With NTL's system, it's better cable but the capacity is shared right to the end point.

Have a look here. It's gonna cost you all of £1.80 + VAT.

http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/GP31A.html

There's a link at the bottom-right to very detailed instructions on how to restore your connection. BT are far less paranoid than NTL. If you bugger it up then you only break your own connection, not half the town's.

Search for "master socket". There are surface and flush mount, single and double ones. Double is very handy for your new free ADSL line.

I was using it purely as an example Still a crunch point at the trunk port on the switch though.

I see what you're trying to say however BT have backhaul issues same as ntl and these aren't solved immediately. Due to the nature of the BT kit it can require kit replacement to resolve issues. Some exchanges once they fill their existing capacity will require quite extensive work to upgrade.

Once BT's 21CN project is completed upgrading backhaul should be trivial, however ntl have also been upgrading and some of these upgrades have made future upgrading easier.

As I said even fibre to the home is a shared passively optically split media.
