Re: BBC Red Button - will it arrive before the Olympics?

Thanks again Ben. I hope now Sky have decided on individual channels, VM will follow suit... i have my doubts though.

As for VM's deal, I saw this.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/media/ne...satellite.html

Virgin Media has already announced that it will offer all the BBC's 24 live streams via its TiVo converged television service, as part of a deal agreed with the corporation in December last year.

Re: BBC Red Button - will it arrive before the Olympics?

Surely Virgin can't be happy with these developments. When the deal was announced back in December for a Tivo app to cover all Olympic streams it looked like the content and footage would be exclusive to Virgin customers with TiVo, and very much looked like a major coup for Virgin.

If Virgin end up offering all the streams as linear channels to their customers, regardless of what Virgin TV box they have, won't this cost Virgin even more money and greatly devalue the TiVo app they are currently working on?

But Chad how can the BBC make content exclusive ? And why would they want to their are far more viewers on satellite than there are on cable.

I thought all of the streams would be exclusive to TV customers via TiVO. I was of the impression whilst you could watch all of the BBC's footage online, TiVo would be the only way to access all the content via a TV subscription.

As far as I know they will also be available via any connected TV via a BBC app. So for instance my Samsung TV would likely be able to access them if the BBC do an app for it

I don't think there was any question of them being exclusive, but TiVo is only paid-TV STBs that can get them (and probably one of few in total)

The BBC is doing the app, not Virgin Media, and I'd expect it have more than just the extra streams in it

What about Youview when it launches; I would have thought that would have the content via apps. I saw some reference in a post to a May launch but don't know how true it is.

VM need to get recordable linear channels. People are fed up with Sky beating them hands down for TV channels and to pass up on these extra channels would be an own goal, irrespective of the fact that V+ users won't get them all unless they are linear channels.

I hope VM aren't using this to drive up Tivo demand, because if they are, they deserve to get defectors to Sky or Freesat. And even with Tivo, as it currently stands, there is no way to record the events when people are at work.

Nothing has been announced one way or the other as to what will be happening on Virgin, so again, how about we wait for facts?

I have to agree with you.
As far as youview is concerned it was supposed to launch early this year ,but it has gone quiet. Even if it does launch it does not give much time for the equipment to get to market in time for the Olympics.

But this is the problem Ben; we're always waiting. Sky anounced yesterday; why are we still waiting for VM to announce SD and HD linear channels?

Because maybe, just maybe, they don't want to announce anything until it's all confirm what it will be?

There still 4 MONTHS until the Olympics starts, in case anyone had forgotten.

No we have not forgotten but it always seems to be the case of the sloth following the cheetah.

Re: BBC Red Button - will it arrive before the Olympics?

I appreciate what you're saying Ben, It just gets a tad annoying that Sky seem to always get the jump on these sorts of announcements.

Anyway I would like, if they could, any VM employee who reads these forums to express the (i think common) view from this forum to VM that we would like the Olympic threads to be linear as well as App based so we can record them. Ta

Are Sky more clever than VM then? They already know what they will do and have anounced it.
