On the letter I got from virgin media, it said "nobody likes price rises". Oh, that makes me feel so much better.

Received my letter today - £4.95 per month increase.

Been thinking for a while that I need to shop around and coincidently (or I suspect not!) I also received a Sky mailing offering a discount for Virgin customers transferring to them of 25% of TV for a year.

The grass isn't always greener as they say. Our current package is £121.99 per month with VM. Basically the VIP deal with a third box and a couple of additional phone services. Sky's offer came in at £117.75 per month for the closest match I could make plus £164 upfront costs. Crucially for me is that I would also need to add a BT Sports subscription which I think is £15 per month. This would mean that the total cost over 12 months would average £146.22 per month.

After 12 months the difference becomes even worse as Sky's "normal price" is £143.25 per month and I would still need to add on the BT Sports subscription.

A couple of other things worth mentioning I suppose is that Sky quote a broadband speed estimate of 40 Mbps as opposed to the 120Mbps I get from VM, and fortunately I'm in an area that actually gets the advertised speed consistently. We also have three VIP SIM Only Mobiles packages with VM where we get unlimited everything for £15 per month. We'd lose the discount on these if we were to move to sky too.

The reason for posting this was to ask if anyone can see something I'm missing. Lots of people seem to be saying that they are getting cheaper deals moving to sky and I was surprised to see that even with their supposed 25% discount they are coming out at around £20 per month more than Virgin. That's after factoring in Virgins price increase and before any increase Sky impose.

Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome. I know I can downgrade if necessary save money if necessary but am interested in how people seem to be finding Sky cheaper, yet I find them significantly more expensive. Is it just the mix of services we have?

Ring them tell them you ain't happy and you can get sky tv on half price deal and if they start saying you are in contract reming them you have 30 days to cancel after recieving letter I got £5 per month deducted till my contract runs out I was going to cancel TV and keep broadband and phone

To be fair RobboEdin, I didn't read the posting as a suggestion to lie. I just read it as telling them that I wasn't happy with the price going up, which is exactly where I am at. The half price deal mentioned is open to everyone on the Sky website, albeit for a shorter period than the 25% deal offered, swings and roundabouts really.

We are in the fortunate position we can afford to pay these costs but its getting to the point for me that I don't want to as the amount is just getting too big for me to justify in value for money terms.

Need to do some thinking and decide how we go.

Who as told him to lie u can get a half price tv deal off sky 2 of my friends just have and kept boardband and phone line thats what I was doing and I wasnt lying.

I apologise if my post seemed harsh but perhaps you could have pointed him at the 50% off deal and suggested a re-calculation would provide him with a better negotiating position.

The bottom line is that Sky will be better for some and Virgin Media for others.

Got my letter about the increase today, it reminded me to contact them to cancel my TV and Phone, which I've just done. I'll be saving over £20pm after the cancellation kicks in, mid-December.

BTW, the increase on my bill would've been £3.25pm, I think VAT needs to be added to that though? Which would make it £3.90pm http://www.vatcalculator.co.uk/

hi people i still have not received my letter . like most on here i think £ 4.95 is to much .i was with sky from 1989 by the year 2006 i felt i was being ripped off and there bb was crap so i left to go to ntl as it was then but having a look round and reading about sky 50% off for 6 months I'm wondering if sky was worth considering again or just have free sat or free view what do you guys think .

Sky 50% off for 12 months bud,at least 3 people I know have cancelled there TV service with vm and switched to sky for that kept bb and phone with vm

I think the reason is simple - BT Sport or Premier Sport, VM have got to make some money, so they put the rpices up.

Premier Sports will be going subscription in the New Year Arthur and as for BT Sports well they ain't going to give it to other companies for nothing as it all cost money nowadays and the money shelled out for it needs to be clawed back.
