Re: 120Mb live areas - Please add to this thread as your area comes online

"Exciting news - we're upgrading you to up to 120Mb, the UK's fastest ever widely available broadband! Our engineers are currently upgrading our fibre optic network area by area to make up to 120Mb broadband available, and we'll let you know as soon as your area's ready.

As you're upgrading to some seriously fast broadband, you're going to need a new modem that's built to handle speeds of up to 120Mb. But don't worry - just click on the link and we'll send you your free Virgin Media Super Hub."

Bit confused here.

I'm on VIP50, don't have a Super Hub and when I check the 120 Mb upgrade it says it won't be ready for another year.

So why do I need a Super Hub now ?

Bristol BS15 area.

you'll need a superhub for 100Mb as the others dont support 100Mb. 120Mb upgrade comes afterwards. My area is due for upgrade in December 2012 but upgrade to 120Mb is due between June 2013 and November 2013.

Thank you Zee.

Perhaps Virgin could add that one line to their message, would stop any confusion to noobs like me.

Thanks again.

If your upgrade isn't going live for another year I would suggest you stick with the old modem for now, I would expect the new superhub 2 to be out before you see 120Mb so you may as well hold out and then get one of those when the time comes.

I'm on VIP50 with the 50Mb speed ricky, so as Zee mentioned, I guess I need a Super Hub to get the 100Mb, which I assume is enabled now.

The message on My Virgin Media site asks me to "upgrade" to a Super Hub...... does upgrading to a Super Hub tie me in to a 1 year contract ?

The VMNG300 that was issued for 50Mbit will do up to 120Mbit, but the routers that were supplied with them won't

yes they do. If you have got a vmng300 zee keep hold of it, it is worth its weight in gold. I have been on 100/10 for over a year now and it has worked perfectly. All you need to do is make sure you have got a router which can handle the speed (preferably one with gigabit ports).

Whatever you do don't think "oh well if i have to pay for another router I had might as well let VM give me a shub for free". There is a reason why they are free and they arent worth the hassel.

you have got onto my favourite subject now I am Linksys (Cisco) all the way. I have had 4 models over the last 10 years and never had a problom with any of they. They deliver rock solid performance and are 100% reliable. As an entry level model I would be looking at this one which is £60 on amazon but you might be able to get it cheaper else where:

http://home.cisco.com/en-eu/products/routers/E2500
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-E250...4817740&sr=8-1

The next series up which is what I have got lets you directly connect external hdds and setup NAS and ftp servers etc and has a higher throughput:

http://home.cisco.com/en-eu/products/routers/E3200
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-Perf...4818205&sr=1-1

Other users will recommend different routers and you can get cheaper routers with similar features but what you have got to ask yourself is this; if you have always had an Audi and love it why drop down to a Skoda?

Hey now, Mon General, lets not go too far ..... I had a Skoda Estelle for 2 years and it never let me down

As for Linksys, agree 100%, except I defected at my last router change and ended up with an ASUS. However I mught go back to Linksys when they upgrade me to 120 in January.
The only thing I dislike is the "spying" Cisco Cloud .....
