Its a term meaning straight, mainstream styled. I.e. non-fetish.

Except that even those guidelines are, in places, either vague or unhelpful
eg "likely to encourage an interest in sexually abusive activity" involves a completely subjective opinion. How can anyone say "X, Y and Z will encourage someone to commit abuse" without reading their mind? It's not as if someone on the film will say "yeah, this is fun, go out and do it!"
"Any form of physical restraint which prevents participants from indicating a withdrawal of consent." means that you cannot show ball gags in use, because they can't say "no" or use a Safe Word but this ignores the possibility of "Safe Signs".
(The following link is to a page on my site and is thus for adults only, however it does not contain any explicit content, merely useful information on Safe Words and Safe Signs:
I hope this is ok to post, but if anyone objects, please delete the link and people can PM me for the address)
"the infliction of pain or physical harm, real or (in a sexual context) simulated. Some allowance may be made for mild consensual activity". How mild is "mild"? Again this is purely subjective. I know some people for whom a good thrashing with a cane is merely a gentle warm up!
"Strong abuse, even if consensual, is unlikely to be acceptable." Why? Because the people who made the laws didn't like it?
It's perfectly possible to go over to Amsterdam etc and buy hardcore BDSM films which show all of the above yet, somehow those "disgusting foreigners" have managed not to turn into complete sex maniacs...

"Vanilla" is a humourous but slightly pejorative term used in the BDSM scene to describe people/ practices which are wholly "mainstream", ie people who simply buy vanilla ice cream, not pistachio or tutti-fruiti etc and don't have a flake or chocolate sauce or whatever added to it.

Re: no more r18 pornos over the net
I'm impressed at Graham knowing about safe signs - most people only think of safe words, but they're not likely to end up so restrained that they can't speak And I agree - one man's mild is another man's extreme. Same goes for vanilla. Who knows what goes on behind the net curtains of suburbia

In my line of work you should know these things
Besides, if you read the books on the resources page of my site, they give all sorts of helpful and useful safety information as well as "hints and tips"

I'd like to believe that's the case, however although I think a lot of people are learning more about BDSM safety it doesn't mean everyone does by a long chalk.

Re: no more r18 pornos over the net
Something I just thought about. Is material transferred to you via the Internet covered under this law? I.e. if I signed up to a BDSM web site, would that be illegal? And if not, what is the difference between downloading movies from the site and getting a hard copy?

That's a good question and the answer is: Perhaps!
The general rule is that anything that's illegal in real life is also illegal on the internet, however they have to catch you with it (eg Gary Glitter) before they can do anything about it.

Re: no more r18 pornos over the net
I think Graham's right.
I think the offence would be something like "transmitting (or soliciting the transmission) of material considered to be obscene".
I just made that up but you can guarentee there's a proper charge for it somewhere. I'm sure they'd make it stand up in court if they wanted to

Re: no more r18 pornos over the net
I can sort of subscribe to the argument that there should be no safe words or signs because the submissive one should trust the dominant one, who should know the needs and limits of the submissive one. Must surely be the highest level of intimacy to know what the other wants without him/her having to articulate it.
It's an education is CF

Safewords are only really needed if someone wants to play a scene where they can shout "No! No!" (meaning "Yes! Yes!!")
But even with experienced players things can go wrong, someone can get cramp, mistakes can be made etc.
No safeword scenes are only for experienced players, even though I've been doing this for a lot of years I wouldn't be happy doing one unless it was someone I had played with an awful lot.

Yes, but that doesn't preclude a safeword.

Re: no more r18 pornos over the net
As I understand it, nothing has changed and it is just a ruling on UK based companies which have never been allowed to sell R18 movies via mail-order. If I am wrong about this then can someone please tell me. I have been getting R18 titles from companies based abroad for some time and I even had one opened by customs, who resealed it and sent it on because I was acting within the law, purchasing legal, licensed material for my own personal use.
The porn laws in this country are bizarre. As Matt said on page 3, what is the problem with regard to buying porn via mail order from abroad but yet you can't from within the UK? I can understand that there is a higher chance of the DVD being intercepted or opened by a minor for something sent in the post but given the fact that licensed sex shops aren't exactly many in number, and that gay licensed sex shops don't exist outside of London, Brighton, Birmingham and Manchester, I am all-but being denied the right as an adult to view legal material for my own personal use. I live in the third biggest city in the UK and the licensing body respoinsible for such matters has refused a gay store an r18 licence several tiems over several years (and raking in a five-figure sum each time) and this is preventing me from purchasing legal r18 material in person so I am forced to use the net to purchase said legal material.
The porn laws are crazy in this country and, as said before, porn only became legal here following a challenge in autumn 2000 and thank goodness that challenge took place!

More or less, but the point is that EU law allows for the free purchase of legal goods from any member states without restriction on methods, hence the appeals.

Isn't there one on the Triangle in Bournemouth? I believe there used to be one there.
