Andrew, although I'm a bit out of touch with current hardware specifications, having no SATA drives in the house yet, my opinion would be that, as drive capacity and speed has improved, so has resilience. I concede that, for PVR use, the drives are expected to run hot as there is usually no cooling fan in the box but the drives are designed for that.
Personally, an MTBF of anything less than 5 years would be unacceptable to me but perhaps I have exceptionally high standards.
{Edit: Apology for deviating somewhat off topic.}

Virgin hope to launch all HD channels that they currently haven't got, sometime in the future.

As legislation stands at the moment any bid by Sky for Virgin media would be thrown out by the monopolies and merger commission.
News Corps bid for the 60% of Sky they don't own, has already got the EU and the UK government investigating as they own The Times,Sunday Times and the Sun newspapers.

Perhaps into the future, such a plan will be reinstated but at this time, when RTÉ needs to focus on developing its digital television strategy, it is investing all of its resources into that development, which must be completed by 2012, when the analogue system will be switched off. Thank you for your query.
With every good wish

RTE Player is not too bad. Watched some recent boxing broadcasts on it. RTE on demand, is that something Virgin would ever consider or is there a lack of demand for Irish broadcasting in the UK?

I miss the Gaelic Hurling and Football from Sentanta days. I thought RTE player would have something but no. The GAA don't seem to like having their sports shown online.

Andrew, the response from RTÉ was "that plan was over-ruled in favour of an international online player service" which implies that they allow access to at least some programming on-line anywhere in the world so it would surely not be an issue for Virgin Media to carry the same service using the cable TV system.

Do you know nothing? The GAA do not approve of armchair sportsmen. You either play the game in the spilling rain or you support it standing up in the rain. It's only stringent health and safety regulations that forced them to introduce headgear for players and seating at Croke Park. They still managed to keep Hill 16 as terraces, as it is considered a national monument, but for soccer games it is either closed off or temporary seating is fitted to appease UEFA.
