Turns out the wire to one end of the small flourescent tube that gives the backlight had burnt through. Had to bend the bezel at the bottom to get it out to solder the end back on as I didn't want to disturb the main circuit board at the top and the myriad connections there to the actual display glass. Everything is soo delicate, I wondered if it would ever work again but it does.
There's a little bit of unevenness at the extreme bottom but I can live with that for a fixed machine.

Excellent
I find too many people these days telling me 'It can't be fixed' - Pah unless they try who knows

The biggest problem these days it trying to work out how to get things apart without wrecking something. I have a comprehensive security bit set but they still come up with a new wheeze now and then. Screws hidden under sticky labels or rubber feet is a common one.

See, now that's something I didn't have before the PS3 incident
I do now though

I know the feeling, we're hoping to paint this year, hoping to just move everything into the centre of the room and do one wall at a time. We don't have any spare rooms to move anything to. Same with the carpets, we'll have to just do one room at a time.

What I did instead of a new carpet I bought a large piece of carpet and had the edges bound like a huge rug
