Has he been around this evening. Guy on one of the England boards I post on knows an NI bloke who has a ticket for sale, wants £100, but could be persuaded to take a bit less.

It doesn't really matter in the greater scheme of things - we all know what will happen. England won't get further than the semis after being beaten by a truly world-class side (the usual jingoism will apply if the opponents are Germany or Argentina), Sven will get sacked, the papers will be full of excuses, and players like Michael Owen will start bleating "Yeah, I know we lost but we WILL win it next time"

England team security leak.
The PSNI has been called in over the leak of highly sensitive security information from the England football camp, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal today.

The material has been obtained by this newspaper and includes the names of police officers travelling over with the England squad.

Also leaked was the full list of the 64-strong England party that flew into Belfast yesterday, complete with the passport numbers of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and all the other stars.

The highly confidential information was supposed to have been faxed by an FA official to the five-star North Down hotel in advance of the players' arrival yesterday evening.

But it ended up in the fax machine of a Belfast city centre business with a similar fax number to the Culloden's.

As the England football team arrived in Belfast yesterday an all-too-familiar scene was happening several miles away - total anarchy on the city's streets.

At the same time as the multi- million pound stars, including David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen, were checking in to the plush Culloden Hotel, the city's Woodvale area was in chaos.

Lorries, vans and cars were hijacked and set on fire as mobs took to the street following police searches in response to a UVF show of strength at the weekend.

Youths pelted police with petrol bombs and the fire service also came under attack.

England is not a one-man show. Not content to show up Northern Ireland on the glamour-puss stakes, they trotted out their sensationally high-paid manager so he could not tell everyone his tactics.

"I think we're going to play better," Sven Goran Eriksson's impressive footballing brain revealed. "I'm sure about that."

To his credit, while he struggled to name any member of England's cricket team, Sven was able to reel off the names of at least four of tonight's minnow opponents - Quinn, Healy, Gillespie and Elliott, whom he described as "a good left foot". No one has explained Northern Ireland slang to him. Obviously.

Ah yes, Northern Ireland. English reporters weren't too bothered about who would be at the other end of the pitch tonight, but Messrs Beckham and Eriksson at least had the grace to talk about their opponents seriously.

Beckham said he'd be happy to see old Manchester United teammates David Healy and Keith Gillespie. Healy may be Northern Ireland's best chance for a goal, but nevertheless Beckham said he was "glad he's fit, because I've played with him at Manchester United and trained with him week in and week out and he's a great guy and a great player." At the end of the day today, that should be obvious.
