Thats not my experience of them, you only had to look to long at the screens on them and they would break!!

1st phone, Summer 1999 - "Philips C12" (horrible brick thing) [Network: BT Cellnet, PAYG]

2nd phone, Spring 2002 - "Nokia 5510" (one of the 1st to have MP3 playback IIRC, still crap though) [Network: Genie (BT Cellnet, Online) contract, which then became O2, Online]

3rd phone, end of 2003 - "Sony Ericsson P900", Symbian UIQ based smartphone [Network: O2, High Street contract]

4th phone, Spring 2006 - "O2 XDA Mini S" (HTC Wizard), Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Phone [Network: O2, Online contract]

....and the one I had had no way of bringing up the phonebook after writing a text you HAD to enter the phone number - at the time I had my entire phone book memorised because of this. I think they fixed this in newer models tho.

Re: What was your first ever Mobile Phone?

Ok.. My phones:
  1. Already mentioned: The 7110 in 1999
  2. Motorola Timeport T250: 2000. Absolutely crap phone, and one reason why I'll never have another Motorola
  3. Sony Ericssion T68i (2001): Brilliant little phone..
  4. Sony Ericsson p800 (2003). Excellent phone, and I still have it as a spare.
  5. P910i (2005). My current phone. I can upgrade, but I am happy with it until the P990 is made available.

Re: What was your first ever Mobile Phone?

My first mobile was the Motorola M301 on One2One, back in 1994. I'm on my 11th or 12th mobile now. I change every year or so.

I know a lot of people used to get the two mixed up, even if they do look nothing alike.

Re: What was your first ever Mobile Phone?

This little (!!!) beauty - sold as the 'Nokia Orange' (because when Orange launched, all its other handsets were Motorolas), this handset is officially the Nokia 2140.

It was compact for its day, but really quite chunky, especially with the 'extended usage time' battery clamped to the back of it.

I bought mine in late 1995.

Ah, happy days. Nothing about today's phones can quite beat the sense of importance you get from extending the aerial before answering a call.

One of my earlier phones had an external ariel that was the length of the phone, it was swiveled around 180 degrees before answering, now that was naff

Nokia 3310: Orange contract (then got it unlocked to use with a Genie PAYG sim)

Nokia 5210: Got it cheap off a mate and used that with the Genie sim, then swapped onto O2 contract.

Samsung E800: Was my g/f's old and well used (and tatty!) Samsung E800 when the 5210 started playing up.

And just got a couple of weeks ago the SE W810i on Vodafone contract, nice.

Re: What was your first ever Mobile Phone?

I was quite the latecomer to mobile phones, I started off with some bizarre Motorola flip phone with a green display, the phone bills were astronomical so I never ended up with another one until the Nokia 5110 was released, then it was a 3210, an 8210, 8310, a Sony Ericsson T610, Motorola V600 and now (so far my favourite) SE K800I

Re: What was your first ever Mobile Phone?

Mine was a Nokia 5.1

Then a Nokia 4.2, 3310, 3410, Siemens M65, Motorolla v220i, then Nokia 1600 sold that and bought a Nokia 7110 which I have now as it just rules for best phone i have ever used.
