To be fair on this subject, i think VM still have alot of duplication throughout the company that needs to be resolved. Alot of reorganising needs to take place as over previous year alot of field staff have been made redundant, as well as offcie staff, but with all the mergers over the years more office based staff have been taken on than has field staff, so from my perspective this needs to be looked into, and looking at the slide show that came out on the internal intranet it looks to me as this is what is planned.

There was a period of around 5 years where some employees at CableTel/ntl/VM or whatever had been on 30 or 90 days at least once a year. These people do get thick skins because it becomes part of daily life, what it does however is produce a workforce who don't give a toss about their employer and this unfortunately is passed on to the customer.
As previous posters have said, every re-org is just the same as one they have tried before. I sold my shares at a nice profit not long before I got out, at a time when they were at $97 and senior management were boasting about how they would top $300. I laughed at how many fools believed this and said I was mad selling so soon, but I always maintained that ntl was riding on a crest of BS.
I don't think there has been much change in ntl/vm since I left, morale is probably worse and employers are treated worse. The rot has spread through the company like cancer, but unfortunately they seem to cut out the good cells instead of the bad ones.

I totally agree, I've worked for Cabletel, CWC & Ntl & I also have friends still in BT & they say the same. (in fact BT seem to be going back to Victorian management principles!) There's no real incentive to be loyal to a company these days, however good you are at your job they'll still shaft you at the earliest opportunity. You just have to play them at their own game, get as much as you can while it lasts. Not an ideal basis for a rewarding career but it's the way a lot of business is these days.

I know that one of the laughable re-orgs focused on the Supervisors for network and service technicians. The company decided that there were too many Supervisors, and to resolve the situation they created more mangers posts for them to move into.
How can anyone say a company with that amount of stupidity can ever pull themselves out of the smelly stuff.
Since I left ntl there have been thousands of redundancies, If I listed the 10 most useless employees (In my opinion) probably half are still employed at VM. Like most large companies when it comes to who is going to get promoted or redundant it's all about politics and sucking up to those bosses who are flavour of the month.
We used to notice those kissing the bosses backsides when there was a re-org and promotion on offer.

Still have a similar situation, the headends recently made a supervisory, which that person from what i can see basically runs the team of headend Tech's. Now what does the manager actually do? Same as in access networks, Principal Engineer does most of managers admin work, Engineers sort themselves out with work, manager is where doing what?

After a couple of past re-orgs we were transferred to managers who didn't have a clue what our job role as voice switch engineers actually entailed, they had to ask us. We used to say don't worry about it, just keep paying us. They obviously couldn't understand the job spec!

Whilst not excusing that, I have had the same problem with BT customer servces.
I think one initiative is to reduce the volume of calls to call centres by isuing a suite of self help tools.
