The US Senate has apologised for spending decades blocking efforts to make lynchings and mob violence against black Americans a federal crime.

Nearly 5,000 Americans - mostly black males - are documented as having been lynched between 1880 and 1960.

About 200 relatives of victims - and the only known lynching survivor alive today - witnessed the Senate apologise.

Senators repeatedly blocked anti-lynching legislation from being approved by Congress. Nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced, three of which made it past the lower House of Representatives between 1920 and 1940.

But despite the support of seven US presidents, the Senate stopped any of them becoming law."

I think that was the argument (it's a fact of life, it'll never change, etc) used for

Not ending slavery
Not giving the working class the vote
Not giving women the vote
Not repealing the Corn Law
etc, etc

Just because someone is different, doesn't mean we have to dislike/hate them - that's one of the beauties of being "civilised".

All them things happened years ago. There is no reason to live in the past and taking it out on the people who are alive now and had nothing to do with any form of oppression is just silly

If only that were true of racism (and religious bigotry/extremism, sexism, homophobia, etc etc) - I think you might find that these "tendencies" are alive and well.

yes but the thing in the events that created some of them happened 2000 + years ago. The crusades were a good few hundred years ago. Again no one I know saw the jews put the christ to death, No one I know saw or heard the prophet Mohammed say anything. No one I know wrote the Koran or the bible or any of the the other documents that stir up so much anger in people.

Sexism and homophobia are currant events though so concede those point but I doubt any of those groups will fly a plane into a building for it or blow themselves up in a car bus or train

I don't think Racism is a prime motive of Islamic terrorists.

well the Jihad is the annihilation of anything that isnt islam isnt it? Race and differences of religion are very similar if you ask me they are both cultural nowadays as we are all multi nations.Everyone one on the planet is a homo sapien of the same species so we are all exactly the same with different pigmentation because of enviromental conditions. The only differences are in what we believe in and how we live our lives
