Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Changing from landscape to portrait and vice versa isn't really enough of a hassle for me to want to install that although I admit it's a good idea.

I've just found out how to get v20 - simply debrand the phone (which is dead easy and legal although it invalidates any warranty) and run the software update. I'm currently installing it right now.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

If you are concerned about power consumption (after all, the more power your phone consumes, the shorter the battery life), Nokia have a free app for all their S60 phones (including N95) to monitor the power consumption.

I installed rotateme (you turn the phone and autoturns to landscape) Cool...

I cannot find nokmote....that's the one you mention.

I have difficulty sharing files with the pc or home network... I use orb via wifi but...

What domain address do you use to sign applications?

In other news my N95 showed up yesterday and I'm rather pleased with it so far. Was already a debranded one so no network rubbish.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Version 20 of the n95 is much improved, though it convert the normal n95 into the 8gb version software wise (all the new things the 8gb brought the old one now has - the flash storage)

With regards to the camera being 'good' for a camera phone it might be quite good but personally i think its pathetic and prefer the 3mp one that was on the n80.

The variable optics / autofocus thing to me is entirely pointless since it has no optical zoom and just adds to the time to take a pic on top of the app loading.
And when it does take a pic the quality is laughable, the images are way overcompressed typically i get 400-600kb images at 5mp (my ixus takes 4-6mb for 10mp)
and then there is the optics 'features' just take a look at this image i took the other week. Notice what its done to the glass on the right

That's probably true. I don't like digital zoom, so I just take with optical or no zoom at all.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Nokia need to release an update that stops the camera compressing photos as the quality is shocking a lot of the time. I mean 550KB for a 5 megapixel image is terrible.

I installed v20 last week and can see no real difference apart from applications in different places to where they used to be. The only major change I can find is the camera doesn't pause for about 5 seconds after you take a picture.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

The addition of demand paging of v20 is apparently a great improvement. Still obviously has less physical RAM than the N95 8GB & the US N95, but at least manages it better.

I'm just gonna wait for T-Mobile to get v20. Don't want to lose my warranty.

Definitely agree with DarthYoda & keithwalton about the photo compression. 400KB or so for a 5MP image is stupid. There should be an option to alter the compression (like digicams have). Space isn't an issue, & why bother having a 5MP camera with a Zeiss lens if the photos are so squished.

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

Just let us turn off the compression if we want. Whats the point in a great lens and 5MP if we aren't really getting the use of it. My old 3.2MP K800 took better quality photos!

Re: Nokia N95 (Unlocking & Tips)

i have v20 on mine now and its much improved, the phone itself is more responsive much quicker to boot up and the camera is quite abit quicker but still has the stupid auto focus lag, and they're still very compressed. Though it does go 'processing image' after you take one which should mean settings will be changeable eventually. Something else i did notice is the 'shrink' option is no longer avaliable, however when sending as mms it auto compresses it when you attach the image.
That pic i linked last time was taken with no zoom at all. I'm guessing its the variable f-stop which caused the warping of the glass because it was at the edge of the frame and it had focused on something close in the middle.

when going to media slider mode it just now rotates instead of going to the other silly app. The gps app is also much better and quicker. Battery life is improved to i can now manage 4 days with heavy text usage, it used to be 3 days at best.
