Re: 50Mb areas

I heard BT is putting in Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) next year in my town of Hemel Hempstead. This will put them on a theoretical par with Virgin for future broadband speeds.

I can then pick and choose my blinding speed provider!

If only Virgin would get their act in gear, I would choose them for at least a year

---------- Post added at 10:00 ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 ----------

By the way, I tried my post code in the checker and the result saying "not yet" doesn't even come up! I thought the site was down so I tried some other postcodes and those worked!

Is this just a glitch with the "not yet" page or is it going to change over to "yes" soon.

Re: 50Mb areas

You would be correct, as with the other exchanges in the first 29 BT will be upgrading between January and March 2010.

Re: 50Mb areas

It's interesting that BT see this area as key but not Virgin. I know Hemel is a core BT exchange and there is some correlation between all BT's core sites and the FTTC first tranch.

I guess Virgin does not have such a large customer base here and it is not a key point on their network.

I have worked for Virgin and worked with BT before - core network and 21CN respectively, but cannot recall the Virgin core.

Re: 50Mb areas

Heh I've probably worked with you at some point.

The VM core is a standard dual ring of Juniper T640s (I think) with OSRs and T320s as aggregators, the CMTS itself going into OSRs which hook up to either the OSRs or T320s above.

Re: 50Mb areas

Maybe not! I was more on the dark side - ntl business -bespoke customer and company networks, fibre, DWDM, SDH, Ethernet etc. Nothing anywhere near as exciting as your area. I know very little about the cable network!

Oh I see, you were more transmission and planning. The stuff I was talking about was the IP core which carried this stuff, babysat LAMs onwards so we might have spoken at some point.

I wouldn't have called my area super exciting all the time either, I had the pleasure of configuring new DIA ports on the LAMs amongst other things

Errrm TurboDoX is enabled in the Ambit VM300 Modem.. So for certain activities there will be some impact, but as you say not for UDP or ICMP Ping.

Indeed, saves Virgin upstream bandwidth and allows more asymmetrical bandwidth tiers.

Thanks for the information, I forgot that that bodge is all CM side

Talking of which how is Neil B planning on beating BT's 5/10/15Mbit upstream when one of the CMTS providers say that bonded upstreams are off their radar for 12-14 months meaning they are likely off the other provider's radar as well?

Re: 50Mb areas

Hi,

I phoned virginmedia this morning to ask for an upgrade to 50MB as i have had notification from virgin that it is now available in my area of bristol.

I was told by the operator that it is not available in bristol and there are no plans to bring it to bristol untill 2010/2011, he said i should not have been notified that it was available, i said that it was available in some parts of bristol now he explained that it was only available in the areas that could take 50MB, he said that bristols network was such a mess that it was not possible to bring it to all of bristol at the moment.

He then asked me why i wanted to go onto 50MB when it was so heavily STM"D, this confused me as reading on here you have always said there is no STM on 50MB at the moment.

I am on 20MB at the moment and my service is absolutely useless, i was hoping that 50MB would solve the speed issues.

I have spoken to customer services many times on this matter and always get told it is my computer that is at fault.

Could someone please enlighten me as to when the roll out of 50MB in bristol in bristol will take place, or whether what the agent told me is true.

I do appreciate you do not always know, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

I am also in Cambridge and at about 10 days ago it was showing as unavailable. I have tried checking a few times over the last couple of days, and like your experience it just returns a blank page.

To confirm, 50 meg isn't available in Cambridge yet. Keep your eye on this thread for launches in new areas.
