I've noticed recently, when using TiVo search, just how often some programmes are actually repeated over the space of 7 days. If you miss a programme on popular channels, you'll often be able to catch it again really soon either on the same channel, or a sister station.

Some examples:

Neighbours is shown on Channel 5 at 1:45pm then repeated at 5:30pm. It's also repeated on 5* at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.

The Gadget Show is broadcast on Channel 5 on a Monday night, and gets repeated on a Tuesday on 5*.

Emmerdale and Coronation Street are repeated each night, about 4 hours after being broadcast, on ITV2.

The Cafe is shown on SKY1 on a Wednesday and gets repeated on a Friday on SKY1, a Saturday on SKY2 and then again on a Monday on SKY1.

Match Of the Day is shown on BBC1 on a Saturday night and gets repeated on a Sunday morning again on BBC1.

All WWE programming gets about 3 outings accross the various SKY Sports channels each week.

Whilst +1 channels would add value, taking time out to check if and when a programme will be repeated can be just as effective. Most popular programmes do get repeated, sometimes more than once. If you are prepared to be a little flexible with your viewing habits, you should catch almost everything you want to watch. This can at times also include movies. I think American Pie 3 has been on SKY1 and SKY2 about 10 times in the past 14 days. I'm sure ITV is currently repeated every James Bond movie at least once. Goldfinger was on last Saturday and then again on the Sunday.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

I know not everybody wants to change their viewing habits to the Tivo way, but I really have no need of plus 1's any more. In the unlikely event of a recording clash Tivo finds the next showing of the program that hasn't been recorded, and as has already been pointed out, this is usually on the channel itself during the week.

This works for me, but then I no longer watch linear TV-think of the space there would be for new channels if we all did this and the plus 1's went!

The post above mine by ozsat confirms that it is possible:

If I'd seen that first I wouldn't have posted.

The point is though, the majority of my posts are based on fact, not vague/speculative/hearsay/inaccurate information like HD Boy.

Why would they even need them?! Like most networks, their shows get repeated across the range of channels all the time, often within a day or two (or less) of their original airing. Even without On Demand or PVRs, if you can find your way around a copy of TV Guide you'll do fine.

Great point. And the TiVo makes it so easy to check for alternate air dates, and better still, notice when an overlap occurs and record another showing instead.

The reason I got TiVo in the first place was I couldn't deal with the annoyances of linear TV (I think you've coined a phrase there, by the way) any more. I'd been spoiled by having a large collection of media on tap on my NAS PC running XBMC without even the need to put the original DVDs in and deal with the menus etc.

Though I wouldn't agree VM TiVo is the best way to watch TV (my PC rig still beats it), it's a massive shove in the right direction.

ozsat is describing how Sky+ works, but the VM boxes are different. If VM boxes worked that way, you would never have been able to watch recordings from channels you no longer to subscribe to.

The subscription requirement only applies to Sky channels, so any recordings made from BoxNation on Thursday can still be played.

I guess I was more right the first time, eh? Still, now there's a definitive answer so it's not all bad.

You still can't play recordings in My Shows when the co-ax isn't hooked up though, is that right?

It is possible for broadcasters to prevent people from viewing recordings of a channel, if they no longer subscribe to said channel.

I am now back at home, and as DF stated, the recordings are viewable

Yourself and other boxing fans may be interested in the film "The Fight Of Their Lives" this Monday. It airs at 10.35pm on ITV1.

You always have been able to, but you need to press the Play button on My Shows rather than selecting the programme then Play through the menus.

Well maybe not Sky Anytime on VM currently (see the Sky Anytime thread) but that's the kind of thing I'm suggesting. Is it too much to ask that all channels make their programming available this way for seven days?

If you're just trying to schedule one night's viewing then most of the popular shows (or our favourites anyway) are on between 19:00 and 23:00 at competing times. We are mostly lucky that we do have +1s for Alibi, 5*, 5 USA, Universal, Discovery etc. but not FX (yet!) or 5 (yet!). Sure you can wait till a show is repeated later in the week but it is bound to conflict with something else that night especially as, these days, different episodes of the same series are shown every week night.

Sometimes you need a bit more flexibility especially if you want to do anything else like make some phone calls, go shopping or eat! I really need one of those fridges with the built-in TV and internet!

As I already said, linear TV may not be the way to provide time-shift channels but there are other mechanisms currently available or on the way but it's a question of how many broadcasters will make use of them to provide this valuable facility.

That is why Tivo has 3 tuners so it will help.

Continuing to be persnickety about something so trivial means you are indulging in the latter part yourself (probably not worth posting), therefore invalidating your criticism by making you guilty of your own mixed idiom, surely?

We should probably get back on topic now.
