Not an expert on this by any stretch of the imagination, but I imagine owing to the different software used on the VM and SKY platform, there could well be a delay in getting the red button available. This does not bother me at all though as I know it is coming soon....

In some respects it doesn't matter what the software is - it's the actual video streams that matter

surly VM wouldn't announce the fact we are getting red button whilst talking about the new season if it was going to take a year or so to actually get it

I think the red button content will be available to VM before the new season. However, Sky and Virgin Media STB's are very different. The software to display the red button content on VM will need to be written from scratch presumably. It is maybe a case of how long will this take? Alternatively they could just stick the streams on the EPG somewhere, much like you can view BBC red button content on Freeview by tuning to 301.

I'm not sure they can do that, don't they need permission to add new channels? (Even when they are interactive streams?)

But yeah, from a software point-of-view, VM have been capable to doing Sky Sports Interactive for a while now, based on all the BBC multi-screen apps we've had over the years. The only thing lacking (until now) have been the streams from Sky.

Speaking of which, will those streams be in SD only, or are there HD streams too?

Yes the software hopefully shouldn't take too long to put together, I'm sure they can get something up and running for the season (even if they refine it later on).

I'm not sure on the interactive streams, though I was under the impression they were all SD.

I'd have thought that with BBC iPlayer, ITV Net Player, 4 on Demand, Virgin1 Player, BBC News Mutltiscreen and the other interactive services already in place, VM should be able to launch an application for the Sky Red Button as soon as they have access to the streams.

They will still have to be Sky branded, so Sky will have to develop the application with Virgin Media.

In the past for instance they've make FX viewable for all customers at the launch of Dexter

Any channel differences between Virgin, Freeview (DTT) and Satellite as down to carriage agreements.
