Re: MERGED - Euro 2004
true.. at least portugal haven't played too well at the moment.. Deco and Figo not done much at the moment..
Can someone let me know is it Rooney playing Ronaldo or are there other players on the pitch as well. From reading the papers i'm not too sure
just not sure when we will make our usual mistake at the start to go a goal down or near the end

Re: MERGED - Euro 2004
Thats the most annoying thing when England are playing, the commentators going on about "Shades of 66 here" or in the French match talking about the Rugby World Cup and Jonny Wilkinson

Jimmy Hill is just about the worst for this, which is why he is totally loathed in Scotland

Well, didn't we win that mini-tournament in France just before the '98 World Cup?
The problem is, it makes us look a bit stupid going on and on about 1966 because it underlines the fact that we've won nothing since 1966, and it makes us look even more stupid as we clutch at straws such as 'oo, it's Euro 96, we're at Wembley, 30 is a round number, that means we must win...' and, the one that is bound to be mentioned more than once or twice this evening, 'The last time England beat Portugal in competition was in the world cup in 1966...' (pregnant pause).
There's nothing wrong with optimism, but going on as if we are destined to win, and then looking gobsmacked as if the natural order of things has been upset when we lose, just annoys everybody (including me, and I'm English!)

yes that was Le Tournoi the trophy was lifted by my namesake who can't spell very well
I think some of the stats these comontators come out with now is a load of rubbish like if a certain player is playing on a tuesday and it's cloady he always scores after 15 mins..
I guess with 90 mins to fill they always will come out with some rubbish so 66 is bound to be mentioned several times.. still would be great to see Bobby's goals in the build up

Re: MERGED - Euro 2004
Anyway all you England fans, if you lose tonight, look on the bright side it might stop the interest rates going up!
Quote:
However UK interest rate markets remain choppy, thanks to the release of comments from the Bank of England yesterday. The UK rate tightening cycle is far from over, so when will the next hike come? That decision might rest on England's success in Euro 2004 - no seriously, it might! If England make it all the way to the final, then June UK retail sales will get an estimated £600 million boost, financed by credit. The Bank of England yesterday noted concerns over 'excess consumer spending and borrowing', so a £600 million surge in spending might well force a July 8th rate rise.

Russ!!! How are we expected to improve our knowledge of the game if we don't ask a few pertinent questions?
Or is it because you can't explain the offside rule??
