That's now largely covered by BT Sport so you may well be saving money compared to NASN days. Of course, it's not identical coverage but I think sometimes it's too easy to see the past with rose-tinted spectacles.

NASN and ESPN America were both dedicated US Sports channels and showed all the major US Sports the exception being NFL however a selection of games could be had FTA on Channel 4 to get your NFL fix.
ESPN in its current form lacks some of the excellent magazine shows that were available on both NASN and ESPN America of course I'm happy BT still carry the US content however the NHL hasn't been available for a while owing to the fact Premier Sports have the rights which is a shame as ESPN America had excellent hockey coverage.

Indeed. Is a complete myth there would be decent other shows on Wimbledon fortnight if it was on a sports channel....

I've read elsewhere that the NHL were asking stupid money for the UK rights so it was not even remotely viable for ESPN or Sky to consider buying them. Premier Sports decided to acquire them and since then everyone has lost out. The sport has achieved an even lower profile than it had before and Premier Sports has lost money on the deal.

Does anyone know why BT closed espn classic down? Always found the decision strange as it was such a unique channel

It was ESPN themselves who closed the channel.
http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...espn-bt-vision
"The telecoms company will continue to broadcast at least one ESPN-branded channel after the deal's expected completion date of 31 July, as part of its BT Sport package. However, ESPN Classic, which is not part of the BT deal, is expected to cease transmission across Europe, the Middle East and Africa."

As Chad has said, it was ESPN who closed the channel. Basically because viewing figures had declined and this was attributed to people watching this type of content when they felt like it through services like YouTube. Being a unique channel is not a guarantee of profitability.
