Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

Phil, have you checked the security settings on the SH2 wireless? Log into the SH2, select 'Advanced Settings' then under 'Wireless' check the 2.4 & 5 GHz Primary. By default it should be set to WPA Auto but if not and it's on one of the newer and stronger encryption settings such as WPA2-PSK this sometimes doesn't allow older wireless cards to connect due to the advanced encryption.

I only found this out when my friend visited with his older laptop and for some reason I couldn't get it to connect when everything else would. Found this solution which worked for us so thought I'd let you know in case this may solve your issue.

Failing that, you don't mention whether you've tried a good old reboot? Turn the SH2 off for 30 seconds and let it reboot and see what happens.

Hope you get it sorted mate.

Make sure you have, otherwise it tends to leave stuff lying around.
I have not removed Norton as yet, I was just stating that if I did and this did not cure my problem then it would have been a waste of time. I would do this if I was convinced beyond all doubt that it would cure the issue but I personally have not had any issues with Norton in all the years I have been using it.

Have you tried to turn off the encryption on the hub to rule out your adaptor drivers 100%? If so then norton is the next logical step

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

You've not given enough information for us to convince you beyond all doubt but put simply, since you've supposedly ruled out every more likely option, what else is there?

You've not had any problems? Good for you. Absence of something isn't much proof though. Those of us who've been fixing problems caused by Norton for over a decade will have a rather more varied view.

Unfortunately, as qas has stated, there's no absolute way to prove it to you without more information but we've all experienced this exact behaviour from Norton in the past, it's a right bugger.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

A family member had been using Windows 8.1 + Norton + Superhub 2 succesfully for 3-4 months. Then suddenly Wifi stopped working. The wifi signal indicator on the laptop showed a good-quality wifi signal but the laptop did not connect to internet.

It turned out the cause was the Norton firewall blocking 192.168.0.1. Family member has no knowledge about firewalls so Norton itself must have been the culprit.

Uninstalled the the whole or Norton from the control panel of W8 and after this wifi was back to normal. I then put Kaspersky Internet Securiity demo version onto laptop. If this had not worked I would run the Ubuntu (at least version 12.04 or newer) LiveCd in demo mode.

Yeah I did suggest that earlier, as it would prove beyond all doubt whether software on the laptop was at fault. However that seems to have been ignored by the OP.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

OK I removed Norton using the Norton Uninstall tool then restarted the Laptop and still no connection to the internet. It seems strange that the Laptop is communicating with the SH2 but has no internet access.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

What happens when you ping 8.8.8.8 now ?

In fact, ping the following (in this order):

192.168.100.1
8.8.8.8
www.google.com

What's the result for each? (And if you get an error, what's the exact error).

I am not ignoring you or anyone else so I am sorry about that. The laptop uses a Broadcom wifi adapter and the drivers are the latest from their website.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

*** RESOLVED ***

I had another go at finding the issue and it now works. In the SH2 settings I changed it to WPA Auto and it connected.

However this is very strange as I thought this was tried when I spoke to my nephew the other day but perhaps in all the confusion it was overlooked.

Wow, so we were all wrong except jb66, and it turns out he had the wrong wireless settings on his laptop all along?

Yikes!

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

I have spoken too soon. I turned on the laptop this evening when I got home from work and guess what, no connection again.

I have made sure the SH settings have not changed and all setting on the laptop and SH2 are the same as last night when I had a working connection.

Re: New superhub 2 and no wifi

I'm just wondering if the sh2 is faulty maybe?
Or maybe a pin hole reset might help?
