HD : Virgin in 3d

I don't think I recall many people claiming HD was a gimmick? There was an obvious benefit to those with large screens - SD and HD, no comparison on a screen 37in and up.

Now, 3D - causes health issues, many people can't see it properly, doesn't work very well on smaller screens or larger screens at a distance of more than a few metres... the list goes on.

The high numbers of 3D TV sales is completely artificial, as many TVs come with 3D as standard. There's simply not enough content or interest in 3D to justify the broad existence of 3D TVs.

Until they iron out the "teething" problems, then the majority of consumers won't embrace 3D and will keep it for the novelty movies in the cinema.

I agree with some of what you say, but I watched Oz the great and powerful at the cinema in 3d and it is truly enchanting, so with my award winning TV and blu-Ray I have just watched it at home and it was every bit as enchanting, it is one of those films that do benefit from it... Now broadcast 3d is a different matter because it isn't capable of sending a full HD image to each eye (neither is passive 3d on a 1080p set) and so the overall quality and effect suffers, where it does happen to look good is football and nature, so c'mon VM get your finger out and provide some coverage.

Well when large TVs first appeared there was not the large range of Full 1080p and 720p HD. Many didn't even have HDMI. It took a while for HD to take off. Broadcast HD took a while to get going too.

3D doesn't really cause health issues as such, people usually already have a health issue.

Just ordered it.

I thought 3D was a gimmick and I'd never watch it as it needed glasses but when it came to the time when I needed to replace my TV - it was a top of the range Sony CRT and CRT is showing its age, I decided to go for another top of the range Sony.

It's mainly 3D Blu rays I watch but they are very, very good. I am truly surprised.

It is worth trying to kid yourself this is not the way forward as it stops you having to replace your TV, but if you are going to get a new TV it is worth getting a decent 3D one.

3D tv is very much a personal preference. Some just don't like it at all, others love it while some occasionally enjoy it. So gimmicky or not, if one gains enjoyment from it then it doesn't matter.

Personally I watch about one 3D movie every few months as I only find the 3D of benefit if it has been done well, which only a handful of films do this. Simply adding depth is not enough to make me want to bother wearing the glasses although I do for the Sky 3D documentaries.

While many see HD as much better, there are probably just as many who think it is gimmicky and they don't need it. Hard to imagine that to be true when you are a geek or appreciate technology as we do.

Well next up will be 4K or Ultra HD. I was in Richer Sounds in Glasgow yesterday and they had an 84 Inch LG Ultra HD TV in store an my goodness the PQ was stunning on it to say the least.

Still think 3D is here to stay though.

Now 3D on a screen that size would be pretty cool!

I take it that once you have 3D, you would start to watch more 3D and get more out of your viewing experience. The other issue that personally annoys me is the often higher costs for 3D discs.

I do plan/hope to get a new larger TV soon, which will no doubt be 3D, so maybe once I'm there I'll end up changing my viewpoint.
