Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Thanks Mick. From what tech support have said, is it looking likely that its just a borked modem (even though it works fine most of the time) or something between the modem and street cabinet?

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Your probably all getting bored of me posting endless stats and logs , but I've noticed something new today. Lost sync a few minutes ago and when it re-synced, I noticed that the downstream recieve power level had gone up 1.5 dBmV, although still well within spec. Now the downstream throughout this saga has been very stable, so why the sudden jump up?

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Temperature has dropped significantly so that might be the cause. But your upstream is still problematic and any problems you are having are likely to be due to a noisy upstream.

VM need to fix this.

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Just had the engineer round, who was a friendly bloke and he told me that it was an area wide problem that they have been trying to sort for the last few weeks. He's already had 6 calls this morning about the same problem from this area. He also checked the power levels which typically have been fine since last Thursday. He left me his mobile number as well so if it drops again and stays off, he could be here much quicker than booking another engineer. Just got to be patient and wait for them to sort it.

On a slightly different note but still related, we've been thinking of upgrading to 30Mb. I know this would put me on to a DOCSIS 3 platform (along with having the Superhub) but would it help alleviate the issues I've been having? Would there still be the issue of a dodgy upstream?

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

The upstream could be dodgy if, for example, the noise is caused in a common part of the network - this goes all the way up to your optical node where there could be tired lasers.

you might as well upgrade enduring these issues. i'm sure vm will be nice enough to sort something out for you.

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

I did actually ring them up earlier via retentions and asked them what sort of deal they could do me. They just quoted the standard new customer price plus the £30 activation fee. I didn't push it any further as I'm not the account holder so need to discuss it with them. If everything is ok, I'll probably ring up again tomorrow and push harder for a better deal.

Bah, not getting anywhere with retentions. They don't seem interested in doing any sort of deals. I've no idea how other people seem to squeeze some decent deals out of them.

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Probably because deals were common when nobody had much of them back in the day, but not so now.

It all depends on how much you can backfoot them into a deal. Don't take no for an answer.

The olde "I want a refund for all the trouble I have had over these last weeks or months" is always a good one, but obviously don't accept the usual crappy £5 sorry credit, explain that you have problems for a long time now and £5 doesn't cover that time.

And if they say sure have 30mb and we will send out the Superhub. Ask them on the phone to make sure they reiterate that it will not cost you anything extra, as in activation fee etc. If they say it won't then go ahead, and if they do charge you at least you have something to fall back on to complain about.

Alternatively rather than tie yourself into a new contract with a potentially dodgy service wait until 01/03/2012 when you should get access to BT's FTTC solution.

Have a look at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WNNP

Seems odd to me complaining about having issues by agreeing a new contract with a supplier for the sake of saving a few quid.

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Sorry to bring this thread back to the top again but I've just started getting these messages again. Although this time, I believe I may have a cause. Its just been pouring down with rain here (still is infact) and where the cable runs under a narrow strip of gravel at the front, is a little waterlogged now. I know for a fact that the cable isn't in any trunking. Can the fact that the cable is effectively sitting in water cause this issue? Everything appear to be working as normal, its just these messages coming up frequently again.

Nope, it's not specific to you and the cable is plastic so waterproof.

Must be just coincidence then, started getting the messages at the same time it started pouring down.

Re: New UCD in effect - anything to worry about?

Doesn't mean there aren't problems elsewhere with an open connection to water, could even have been increased use of lighting or whatever putting noise onto the network but it's not likely to be the actual cable itself.
