Some of these people have risked their lives to come here (you try hanging on to the underside of a Eurostar while it goes through the tunnel). Do you *really* think the vague chance they will be shot will stop them?

Anyway, while I would like to see immigration lower, I don't think they are exactly over running the country yet.

The problem is that a lot of English (not so much the Scottish and Irish, don't know about the Welsh) people are not interested in training. We appear to have this idea that the entire planet owes us something. Other races do not have this problem. I see it at work. Some races (particularly Indian & Oriental) will work hard to solve a problem. The English people often call a technician at the first sign of the problem. In one particular case, a student threatened to put in a complaint about me because Premiere (the video editing application we use) wasn't easy to use. BTW, it is, if you bother to follow the instructions.

We do need economic migrants. Look at the NHS. They are having trouble in a lot of areas recruiting enough Nurses and Doctors. Why? Not enough people are entering training. What do they do? Let people die because there aren't enough staff, and too few candidates in training? Or, recruit a Nurse or Doctor from abroad?

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

The problem to me seems to be, not that too many are coming in, or that people are being waved through unchecked (although this does go on to some extent), but the biggest immeadiate problem that has to be people being turned down, aren't leaving, and that people in the system 'disappear' in the beaucracy.

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

I agree with you on that one punky there are not enough checks done before, during and after,so many of the ones who want to stay in the country but carnt magically disapear in the system because nobody checks that they have left the country.

Migration Watch... a nasty, right wing organisation with rabid anti-immigration views and a cavalier and ideologically driven approach to statistical analysis.

http://www.aviddetention.org.uk/migr...-wing%20agenda

Through BBC online: "The Home Office says that Migration Watch UK's figures should be treated with - considerable caution" Others said "Little more than idle speculation" "Scaremongering" "Whether this is a double-counting of asylum seekers is not clear" "What this does is give the far right ammunition to propagate their own particular views" Plus "Leading article: A nasty little group playing an old, and unwelcome, trick" from the Independent Newspaper"

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

Why is it that when it comes to issues concerning either asylum or immigration some people seem to lose all sense of what is right and what is wrong. Issues like this seem to be rehearsed and regurgitated with the same old inaccuracies and exageration and idiotic, extreme acts being suggested.

Immigration is not a problem, pure and simple. People always ignore the fact that immigration figures should be balanced with those leaving the UK.

Toleration please.

I agree there are lots of people leaving the UK these days, but the quality of people leaving are vastly different from many of the ones coming in.

Many leaving are professional people, and the ones coming in are very often not suitable to take skilled jobs left vacant by the ones leaving.

Now why did I think someone might concentrate on "these days" UK emigration for residence overseas has been hitting the 250,000 - 300,000+ for many years even during the Thatcher years, when I became one of those emigrating.

There are professional and skilled personnel migrating into the UK as there always will be , no matter the party in power, such personnel leaving for permanent residence overseas.

Re: France to tighten immigration controls

My worry about immigration can be summed up as follows.

If you have a jug of orange and you add a tablespoon of water then it's pretty much unchanged. If you do this every day for months and years then you end up with a jug of water.

UK=jug of orange
tablespoons of water=100 immigrants

I love orange and I love water. I wouldn't want to choose one above the other so I would much rather have weak orange. Eventually you have to stop adding water or you lose what you had....

You ought to be careful what you say about racial purity, Salu. People might say you're echoing the BNP.

Using your analogy, my worry is that the jug, being England, never changes size. You keep adding water, it overflows. This country can only support a finite amount of people, and I think we are probably bouncing around the maximum anyway. We let in as many as we can, but that ignores the overstayers and people getting in illegally, so really, we're actually over subscribed.

Their figures are as good as anybodys.

The government have already admitted that they have no idea how many illegal immigrants there are in this country.

This country is an island. IIRC it's got roughly the same population as France, which is 5 times bigger. Wherever you go here there are people putting houses on any spare piece of land, even to the extent that green belt is being reduced. The roads are choc-a-bloc, and there are queues for pretty much everything; add to that the fact that there are not enough jobs to go around.

As Punky says, the jug runneth over... and still they try to fill it...

I hope it doesn't come across like that. As I said. I love orange and love water. I have no problem with people from other countries living here. I just think that a) the jug is finite and b) if we don't limit the gateway we will dilute our society. Without getting into another multicultural debate; if we allowed as many French to come and live here as they wished eventually the UK would become France II.

Erm .. actually it's not that there aren't enough UK born people entering health care training (I'm talking Uni places for doctors & nurses), it is a fact that there are not enough tertiary places for them at Uni / Poly. Why ? Because the tertairy institutions get more money for training foreign students !!

Partly correct .. only the 'water' bit of your analogy isn't actually flavourless, it has a distinctly foreign flavour which will inevitably overwhelm the orange.
