Re: AVG free Version 7
Just noticed one problem. With the default installation, Eudora's incoming emails were not being scanned. However after reinstalling using the advanced setup option and selecting the "personal email scanner" plug in as well as the auto matically installed "Eudora" plugin, email is now both scanned and certified by AVG.
With regard to switching off Zone Alarm Pro mail safe, with Eudora at least, some messages from eicar (virus test) were not intercepted as they were downloaded while ZAP mail safe was on. However with ZAP mail safe disabled, all the test messages were intercepted. One thing to note however, even when messages were downloaded with ZAP mailsafe on, AVG did identify the messages when I attempted to open them within eudora.
ZAP mailsafe has now been disabled.

Did you run the AVG scan first before removing it? It act's in a pro-active way 24 hours a day and then scans every 24 hours at the time you tell it to. Seems a bit harsh removing it unless you allowed it to scan first and it found nothing. Any clues as to what virus it found and where it was hiding?

Yes - it scan's every night when I went to bed as well. It didn't find anything, I didn't note down what they were as I uninstalled it at that point as it wasn't doing it's job.

Re: AVG free Version 7
Unfortunately no anti virus is 100% accurate and find 100% of viri, there have been times when scanners such as avg have found virus files where norton has missed it. Use whichever you are more confident in or more comfortable with

I don't even use a virus scanner. I take the right precaustions so I'm not some one who falls victum of one. Even if I do catch one, I have F-Prot on a DOS boot CD

Well said that man.
An important part of your malware defenses should still be your Mk-I greymatter.

Re: AVG free Version 7
*evil cackle * Writes brand spanking new virus, lets AVG have a signature to detect it, and releases it upon unsuspecting Norton users.
Just kidding folks

Agreed, the recent Bagle virus recently slipped past NAV on my work PC, it was only my suspition that made me submit it to Symantec who confirmed my suspitions. A quick manual update soon fixed NAV. By the time I got home my AVG6 was updated and was able to spot the virus. I think a lot of it is in timing. I tend to out of habbit check my email at home around 6-7 pm, which is why AVG is set to update arounf 5 pm.

I always tend to hit the manual update button prior to loading up Outlook or Outlook Express for the first time in the day out of habit. Can't be too safe can we
I'm just wondering how safe Scott's system is if he has no pro-active anti virus Do you do regular syware/trojan/ malware sweeps at all??

You don't use one at all?
Even if you think you're taking the right precautions, you can still get infected.

Re: AVG free Version 7
AVG??? Wouldnt trust it, I constantly got warnings of Virus attacks, mostly trojans that it could do nothing with, half the time the files it said were infected didnt even exist. Nothing ever appeared in the virus Vault and when I installed Nortons again I was absolutely riddled with damned viri.
Sorry but its not worth the risk, I value my data. £30 for NAV is better than data recovery and lost data anytime.
