Re: Press at it AGAIN!!!
Might be fairer to be laying some gripes on Beckham's fan site (does he have one?) - the ref was definitely one sided (should NOT have been refereeded by someone from a country we beat!), but the ref didn't miss a crucial penalty.
Does Beckham really justify his place as captain? - especially now he's not even based with a team here? - perhaps the once-great footballer and ex-Spice girl can fade into obscurity together?

... is a joke?
lol, sorry i'm not a fan of newspapers.. in fact, my g/f was flicking thru a copy of the news of the world (that my parents bought) today whilst waiting for a phone call here, and she noticed about 20 smelling mistakes - lol, they can't even be bothered to proof-read the stuff they serve up!
Sorry for going a bit off topic here...

Re: Press at it AGAIN!!!
as a student of psychology, i find newspapers fascinating.. how they can guide people into certain viewpoints, how they restrict people's knowledge, and so on.. there seems to be an intelligence behind the stupidity, one geared to making the most profit possilbe
ok i need to have a shower now, this thread is getting all orwellian on me

Quit blaming individual actions on 'England'. Gotta love how a big portion of the inhabitants of Wales, Ireland and Scotland lay into us everytime individuals make this country look bad.
As for the actions against Meier, it's typical of The Sun to do this. I hold them on the same regard as hooligans. Well, they have the same IQ level anyway.

Hmm, it just seems that when you win it's "Big up to the team", when you lose, it's "down to individuals...."

I think if England were a little more gracious in victory then perhaps there'd be more home-grown support

Who said this was about winning or losing? Perhaps you misunderstood me; I made a point that this problem was down to individuals (in this case The Sun), and not the whole of England.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the rest of the UK would still be as bitter. Nothing like good ol' footy rivalry though.
Perhaps when the rest of you folks can compete to a good level then it'll be a little less one-sided.

Actually as a Welshman I can tell you that's why most people around here have reason to resent England. We certain would not begrudge you success for any other reason.

Ahhh yes, the standard English response, when your back's against the wall, attack other teams instead of concentrating on your own weaknesses

Re: Press at it AGAIN!!!
What goes around, comes around. One of these days Russ,Wales will win.Or Scotland or Northern Ireland.
However I do seem to remember that when Wales were winning so much at rugby they were a little over the top themselves. Only a little though.
I think if the media didn't pump up the public so much we might possibly be more gracious winners and less bitter losers. You would think we would be used to it by now though.....
I just wish we weren't turning into a nation of whingers and whiners.I don't think it's part of being 'English' and I wish I knew where it had come from.
Incog.

No offence intended, but perhaps if the Welsh, Scottish, and Irish took no notice of what English footy fans are saying/doing, and worry about what's going on inside their own borders, then perhaps there might not be as much resent towards us.
I'm sorry to say that we might be bitterly disapointed when we lose and some of us blame the loss on someone/something else, but that's just the way we are. You can't blame us for spirit.

You're missing the point - we don't begrudge England from celebrating. No, it's the way the press have little time for anything Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish.
When Wales played (and subsequently beat) Germany 2 years ago, did the Sun have its centrepages dedicated to pictures of John Hartson, the way they did with Rooney during Euro 2004?

No offence intended right back, but how are we to take no notice of what English fans say or do when it's all over the TV, radio, internet and newspapers??
