At a guess I wonder if it's because the S3 connects using MTP in Windows, rather than allowing you to mount the SD card directly

So to change that you need root access

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Pretty sure you don't need to be rooted to sync stuff.

Busybox is generally installed when you root a phone and can be used by many different apps.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Well android is an open system but manufacturers like to lock it down for licencing and support reasons I guess. So if your phone breaks and they see it is rooted they are likely to say that your warranty is invalidated as you have modified it.

Rooting opens up all the potential of the phone but at the same time means you can tinker in more ways that could potentially break it. In normal use this will probably never happen and to be honest I have never have a problem with either of my 2 phones that I rooted, even though I tinker with a lot of things most people would never touch.

That being said, there is a chance you can kill your phone in the initial rooting process if you did something wrong. The flashing changes the bootloader I think.

Once rooted there are easy ways to backup your phone, install custom roms which can make the phone run faster, better interfaces etc. For me rooting allowed me to run some network tools that wouldn't run on non-rooted due to the artificial limitations. The S3 is good enough in most areas for me not to even consider flashing another rom on to it.

The only downside so far that I have seen is Sky Go wont work on a rooted device, although a workaround is normally found.

Rooting is quite literally the equivalent of gaining access to the Administrator account on Windows.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Not something I have seen before. What guide are you following and what version of android is your phone? There are different ways for different versions and different models of phone.

Only done it twice myself and on my S3 it was using Odin and Cf-Root. Didn't copy anything to any cards, just ran the programs on my while connected via usb and in debugging mode. This does flash the kernel to make recovery and phone backups easier, as well as a way of going back to a stock unrooted rom.

The superuser app only runs on an already rooted phone I think. Any program that needs root privs is granted it by that app.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

Yeah it does sound like it is along the right path. Would be good to know if your phone is currently Android 4.1.1 jelly bean or 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich. In the settings menu on the phone right at the bottom is an option > About Device, will tell you this as well as kernel/build numbers which can be useful.

Before I rooted I did a lot of googling for the versions I had before finding the right guide. I assume from what I saw that there are different methods and exploits for each one.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3

I'm gonna bite the bullet and take out sd card which i didn't really want to keep doing, and sync that way for the moment, does anyone know quickly how to save your files to sd card as apposed to internal memory which is default i believe.

I actually dont need to take card out as its not syncing that way either, my old card from tomtom opened up program as soon as pushed into reader but its not doing what i thought it would.
