Re: U.S Election 2020
Why would elections be postponed or not happen ?
Surely they can pick someone else from Trumps party to replace him, or just pull out, and if there were only the two choices, the other wins by default ?

Exciting - almost enough to rival Brexit. Popcorn anyone?

It won’t happen because the founding principle in America is that even though on a personal level, the sitting president may become incapacitated, it must still have a functioning chief executive. If Trump becomes too ill and dies, Mike Pence will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. It is almost likely should something as drastic as this could happen, Congress may delay the election. If not, Republicans will have to have to choose a new presidential candidate. Joe Biden doesn’t win by default.

Re: U.S Election 2020
In a no election scenario the problem is Pence falls out of the line of succession at the end of his term either way. Who is the President after that?
The Senate would still have 2/3rds of its membership if there's no election. There’d be no House of Representatives.
(I don’t think there will be no election but intrigued by the thought experiment).

Normally, it would Chuck Grassley, Senate President Pro Tempore - he’s 87 years old.
However, given that Democrats would have a majority of the returning senators (35 out of 65), they might chose to replace Grassley with a member their party as president pro tempore.

Trump was supposed to take part in a midday call about coronavirus support for seniors that was listed on his public schedule - instead, Vice President Mike Pence kicked off the call.
He hasn't tweeted since he announced he had tested positive (14 hours ago) - yesterday, he tweeted/retweeted over 60 times.

Sadly reminds me of how BoJo's Covid was talked down - had it mildly, still working, nothing to see, then hospital as a precaution only and finally on a ventilator. Hope it doesn't come to this.

Inclined to agree. I think there’s potential wider benefits to a high profile, serious coronavirus case as people have become complacent over the last few months.
Although I also do wish him well in the long run, I doubt it will humble him. I could see him getting worse using recovery as “proof” it’s not serious.

I’ll go out on a limb and suggest Trump won’t die.

President Donald Trump is in “good spirits” after his Covid-19 diagnosis on Friday and has been treated with a Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. “antibody cocktail,” the White House physician said.
“Following PCR-confirmation of the president’s diagnosis, as a precautionary measure he received a single 8 gram dose of Regenerons’s polyclonal antibody cocktail,” the physician, Sean Conley, said in a statement released by White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

They’ve given Trump an antibody cocktail that is currently in Stage 3 trials - that’s interesting...

REGN-COV2 is currently being studied in four late-stage clinical trials: two Phase 2/3 trials for the treatment of hospitalized and non-hospitalized (“ambulatory”) COVID-19 patients, the open-label, Phase 3 RECOVERY trial of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the UK, and a Phase 3 trial for the prevention of COVID-19 in uninfected people who are at high-risk of exposure to a COVID-19 patient (such as the patient’s housemate).

Regeneron press release from 3 days ago
https://newsroom.regeneron.com/news-...ral-levels-and
Quote:
Additional Trial Background
Among the first 275 patients, approximately 56% were Hispanic, 13% were African American and 64% had one or more underlying risk factors for severe COVID-19, including obesity (more than 40%). On average, patients were 44 years of age. In total, 49% of participants were male and 51% were female.
At least 1,300 patients will be recruited into the Phase 2/3 portion of the outpatient trial overall. Patients will be followed for 29 days, with viral shedding in the upper respiratory tract assessed approximately every 2-3 days in the Phase 2 portion of the trial and clinical endpoints assessed via investigator and patient-reported data throughout.
In addition to this trial in non-hospitalized patients, REGN-COV2 is currently being studied in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized patients, the Phase 3 open-label RECOVERY trial of hospitalized patients in the UK and a Phase 3 trial for the prevention of COVID-19 in household contacts of infected individuals. Recruitment in all 4 trials is ongoing.

Giving the President a treatment that’s only been tested on less than 2000 people is concerning, imho.
Just on the news = Trump on way to Walter Reed Medical Center (by helicopter).
