As I predicted, it seems that whatever is decided will be close (according to BBC forecasts).

If people have voted to remain, no matter how small the margin, that will be the end of the matter as it will be a case of "The people have spoken".

If people have voted to leave, I think that Cameron will invite the leaders of the main opposition parties for talks upon the best way to deal with the situation.

Their 'united' response could be to say that the margin was so close that it would not be worth the risk of leaving, so they will "put the country first".

Alternatively, the PM may go back to the EU and say that the public need more concessions to convince them to vote the 'correct' way. After these concessions have been agreed, the PM could either hold another referendum or say that as it was such a close vote that the concessions will be deemed to be enough to satisfy the majority of people.

To summarise, I think that a remain victory will be accepted as evidence that the public wish to remain.

A leave victory will be treated as 'work in progress' until they can either spin the leave decision to mean exactly the opposite or tinker with the rules (immigration, benefits etc) until the public finally accept that remaining is for the best.

I believe that Cameron only scraped into power by promising this referendum, but it will probably be his downfall one way or another- but I very much doubt that we will be leaving the EU, regardless of the result of the referendum.

I'm either gonna make a lot of money tonight, or it'll be baked beans for dinner for a long time.... I still think that England (not London which is majority foreign) will vote leave and that's where my dosh is. Although I have hedged just in case.

If remain wins with less then 500k I think that mistake of sending votes out to people who shouldn't have voted is going to cause a big problem.

The winning post is 16.8 million, leave passed the halfway mark (8.4m) first.

...and if leave wins it will be an excellent excuse for the Government to declare the result as unsafe so that they can ignore it.

I think if the government attempts to nullify this referendum there will be big trouble likewise this referendum has been so heated the usual EU tactic of insisting on another referendum will also not be acceptable. Those 500k "mistakes" were seen as likely remain voters so it's not a thing the government can really use and not be accused of shenanigans.
